If lanterns also need iron, I will have to kill somebody. I don't care if the world is 8 times the size of the surface of the earth because, guess what? Virtually no computer can handle a map that big, and most computers couldn't get anywhere near that
Heck, I get pissed with modders when they add another iron recipe that is needed to fully enjoy their mod
I think that the glowstone dust powered lanterns theory makes the most sense, especially since it possibly explains why lanterns were pulled from the Halloween update: the Nether isn't working in SMP yet so there is no way to legitimately get glowstone dust. I predict that lanterns will come with or very soon after the update which enables the Nether in SMP.
As to the merit of lanterns or which other materials will be required to make them: there are many other threads devoted to those subjects.

im sorry, but the only ignorance i found was in your reply. not once has anyone suggested changing your game, only ours. Notch has stated many times that he would like a survival slider, that would adjust the requirements to survive for different players. Why should I or Rafe not be allowed to stave off starvation or the elements? Or try to manage the amount of food and supplies to bring on an expedition without breaking a weight limit? Your saying these things should be denied to us, simply because you dont like it. Sounds pretty ignorant to me
It's called mods.

By the way, the Minecraft world will now be known as "Arth".
Lanterns=do not want!
Glowstone lanterns=break game
How would that break the game? Because it's a permanent light source? Er... torches are already permanent at this point. So the game is broken right now? He's just interchanging one permanent light source for another.
And as for the recipe, yes it will be harder to make, but I don't see the point of complaining about how long torches will be made to last. At this point, we're all just guessing. Notch has said that if an update makes the game not as fun, he'll redo it. Now don't get me wrong, if torches only last a night, or not even that, then I'll join the band wagon and cry "NO!" If and when (we're still not 100% he will do this, especially not this soon) he does add lanterns, if it turns out it's a horrible idea, we can all let him know that.
Notch has previously said that carryable lights won't be possible with the current lighting system. Also, he did say that lanterns are low on his priority list.
There is a mod that does it, if modders can do it, notch can.
I'm against finite torches unless they add difficulty options to turn it off and only let torches extinguish if they remain in an unloaded area for a significant amount of time. Turning it off would be preferable for large scale builders and only letting abandoned torches go out would be for the easy/medium difficulty people.
For you hardcore players, sure, torches can last five days. So you either have to make only short trips away from your home or fight your way back out of the mineshaft. (My mining trips easily take 5-10 days)
Also, I just wanted to comment on two types of people in this thread that I find hilarious.
-The survival extremists. "It's called SURVIVAL MODE, that's the entire point of this game!"
You do realize that even if you required food, water, and shelter, the survival section of this game is over before the first hour, right? In that time, you can build an underground home complete with tree and wheat farms. After that, you have absolutely no need to ever leave. You're no longer surviving, you're expanding and exploring.
-The not quite cheaters. "If you were smart you'd stockpile torches, they're changing to lanterns in the update."
Hate to break it to you guys, but you might as well use INVedit. If Notch said he was replacing sandstone with diamond blocks in the next update, would you stockpile that? You're just abusing an update mechanic to trade an abundant resource for a rare one.
If notch really wanted to prevent update abusers from getting free lanterns, he could just add lanterns without making torches finite right away, say "Hey, you have a week to stockpile lanterns before I make torches finite,", then make torches finite a week later. I don't really think that's necessary, but it seems like people would object to that less than their torches not changing and suddenly their placed torches starting to burn out with no chance to craft and place lanterns in the areas they want to stay lit.
Personally, I'm not sure if making lanterns require glowstone dust is a good idea because that basically means you have to get the best tools in the game (the Nether requires an obsidian portal, obsidian requires a diamond pick) before you can get permanent lighting. If that's going to be the case, why not just make glowstone blocks drop the block themselves instead of 1/9 of a block in the form of the glowstone dust? If people still want lanterns, the recipe can use the block instead, but it seems like a HUGE price for style to make the block form of a light source cost 9x as much of its rarest component (I'm ignoring things like glass, because glass is easy enough to get, and people seem averse to the idea of it requiring iron as it is, though I'd still consider glowstone dust quite rarer than iron in terms of difficulty to collect) compared to a more everyday-convenient lantern.
with charcoal existing, all preexisting maps having torchs turned to laterns, I really think that lanterns should use glowstone dust
This.
I was already for lanterns out of glowstone dust and finite torches before the charcoal update, now I feel like it's pretty much mandatory.
What if someone wants to start a new world? Or they are new to the game and they have just made their first world? Glowstone dust isn't the easiest thing to come by, and you can't get into the nether straight away either.
I really do not like the idea of adding lanterns and making torches finite. I really don't see how constantly relighting your torches every 50 minutes or so until you get into the nether is fun.
Personally, I'm not sure if making lanterns require glowstone dust is a good idea because that basically means you have to get the best tools in the game (the Nether requires an obsidian portal, obsidian requires a diamond pick)
No, all you need is three iron ingots (well, four: one for the flint & steel). I've found plenty of lava lakes well above the traditional lava layer (including several on the surface), and still it doesn't take the best tools to get to the lava layer if necessary. So it is most definitely possible to create a portal without finding a single diamond, and if you're lucky without venturing more than a few meters into a cave.

before you can get permanent lighting.
As opposed to getting a near-infinite source of permanent lighting within one or two minutes of starting the game?

I'd agree if Notch had stopped and said, "The glowstone blocks ARE your lanterns" and made the torches finite. I don't agree with the "glowstone blocks are lanterns" theory is for that very reason: it's already difficult to reach the glowstone, so the 9-to-1 cost seems arbitrarily expensive (that, and torches are still infinite). If lanterns were to be powered by glowstone, I would think they would only need a single glowstone dust per recipe to make; again it would make no sense to use the block because the block itself already provides the maximum light possible.

Everyday, convenient lanterns are not infinite. For that matter, neither are everyday, convenient torches. Comparing Minecraft to real-life sets up very tenuous analogies and is not recommended.

As did I. I labeled it my "Stacks o' Lanterns" chest. It is still sitting there, full of torches...

Thank you, some glass and glow stone dust seems a lot better to me then a punch of iron!
iron is already hard to come by as it is!
>implying glowstone isn't harder to get than iron
No, they've been doing that for ages. You just now found one, since they're quite rare. Unless you mean lava lakes, of course.

I'll be honest with you, I've never actually played Magic: The Gathering before.

Yes. The lanterns are inevitable.
