Have you tried spawning them on glass and half blocks? Apparently mobs have a hard time spawning on those.

Do you know if you can increase the egg laying rate by supplying the chickens with growing wheat in their cage?

I really doubt this. Someone test.

There is an SMP server for testing chickens, but it hasn't been up in a while.

I have a bad problem with my farm, I'm shooting eggs not thowing them at a grass block and the spawn rates are terrible maybe like 1 in 16, so I invedit 1 egg in and 4 chickens came out. WTF?
