Compactness doesn't exactly matter if its going to kill you no matter what you do, right?
Small dispenser machines would be good for defending a hallway, like the old pot of boiling oil trick. Defending a base requires... well, overkill!
[rant] i imagine that youve never played on a pvp server. at least not the kind ive been on. its just common sense. if you see that huge monster wall of lava, and all that redstone running behind it, why would you even go near it? compactness in minecraft = everything, especially if your trying to build this into a base without ruining the beauty of it. do you really want a base thats all pretty filled with redstone circuits and lava?
plus, this is much easier and cheaper to build. [/rant]
Here are 2 of my hallway defense (well, 3 really) dispenser guns.
This is self explanatory. Each step on a pressure plate fires 4 arrows. Kills mobs dead.
Next is what I call the 'visitor's center' hehehe. The visitor enters the obsidian room via a 1 way door, and steps onto the plate to ring a doorbell.
The owner of the building observes them through the glass roof panel, and decides whether to: flood the room with lava, pull the lever and kill the visitor with arrows, or let them in through a button near the door.
For a nasty surprise there are 2 fully automatic dispenser turrets facing the door that can be triggered by the owner to kill the person they just let in.

My first post!
you should cover up the dispensers in the visitors room so that people don't know it's behind it.

I made this and it was awesome. Then I put a wall of lava in front of the dispensers and it was even more awesome. I got people to come check my new LAVA PORTAL and they were like WOAH and then I shot them all.
"and then I shot them all." I would quote this if my quote wasn't already ba.
For any of you who want to know how to make a very rapid pulser without having it burn out, use this design:
= Redstone
= Any block
= Redstone Torch
The torches are attached to the blocks of course. To finish it off, add two redstone on top of the dirt (or sand or wool or whatever) blocks, and you're done! It will never burn out, but it makes alot of noise.

Wouldn't this one work the same way, but take less space?

i use a much more compact pulser in my design that does not burn out. this post is irrelevant to the OP.
btw bob, 15 pulsers are not necessary for 4 dispensers.
I've followed the plans, but it doesn't turn off, let me check it.
also,

this is not the dispenser science thread. post this here instead: http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1020&t=142025

never ending fire power. mwahaha!

x2
(from the top)
takes up 2x2x3 blocks, and pulses fast
