i'd buy a laptop with a intel i7 quad core CPU and as much RAM as a laptop is capable of holding, since that is all that matters for a minecraft server host comp. i use my desktop gaming rig for the client, because i very rarely keep a world for more than a few days (up to a week if it's a good map)
this is, of course, assuming i can't afford actual server hardware. what's your typical server run... like $1,000? lol
If I wanted to host a dedicated 24/7 server for Minecraft I guess I would buy a server box, but I don't even play MP. As for running the game well... My 6 year old shitbox of a gaming rig has no problems there, it's not exactly a demanding game. I'm planning on blowing ~$1600 on a new box soon, but that's not so much for Minecraft as it is for more system intensive games.

Relax. Take a deep breath. Everything's not going to be O.K.
Check out my gaming blog, Zombie Arcade. Now with Minecraft videos!
Okay ma'm, we finished building the kitchen, but you can only cook grilled cheese in the kitchen. Yes, you dont need much to make it, and this kitchen can do much more, but the kitchen be can used only to make grilled cheese sandwiches.

Just so you know, that's not really a thing. Servers are pretty much built from the same components that you use to build a regular pc. It's all about the software on it, and the case I guess if you have a rack you want to mount it on.
Granted, you're more likely to see 6+ core processors, more ram, less powerful video card (or chipset), etc. in a server build, but it's more about optimizing the hardware for serving, rather than having hardware that is specifically for serving.

meh, i actually know zilch about servers, never had a need to learn about them
If I had the money I would, but I wouldn't just have it for Minecraft only.. Other little things like iTunes, FRAPS, Sony Vegas (other obvious things DUH) would also be on the computer.
Hell no, If your computer cant handle Minecraft, thats sad.
Not really. But yeah.
A friend of mine has a server computer that's on 24/7, and it's ok, but I'm not sure how much it cost him. It looks crappy though; it's still using windows 2000, or something, and the monitor is one of those super old beige box things.

to be honest i would not buy a new computer to run a minecraft server. i did however buy a cheap dedicated vps (if you buy a non dedicated they in most cases will force you to upgrade). several of my friends bought minecraft when i told them that multi-player could be done just as if it was a single player mode (they are more mmoRPG players so to them single player is boring lol). i tried for a while running it off a three bar connection off a spare laptop i had from years back but a. it was laggy as **** thanks to the fact my main router is so heavily locked that i cant run it on that and b. the router i was using to run it was an optimum wifi router which if you know what that is a free router that the cable provider puts up for all to use. i dropped 12.50 to buy a dedicated vps with 785 mb (pretty sure im right there dont feel like logging into my control panel to check lol) and 2 gig of "flash memory" (flash memory is used by everyone if i'm wrong correct me). the vps uses a Debian (again i think im right on this lol) based OS with VNC installed. once you get the hang of using linux (again i believe i'm right lol) you can easily install Java and in most cases they have the os load with VNC. after you get it all set up you can start the VNC software and remotely see the desktop of your vps and just use the linux server start up to run your server. i have run 4 people on this vps with slight lag every once in a while. ive noticed however that if i leave the server going for days on ends eventually the lagcan occur more frequently but the simple fix for me is just to reboot the vps and then use the console to restart the VNC software which takes all of 2 minutes tops. so bottom line if your looking to create a small server for just friends or a select few people then go with a low priced package from x10vps or some other vps site. i cant speak for higher end packages as ive only ever bought the low end one but i can tell you that i already renewed as the service i got from them regarding a small issue i had which they responded to and fixed in no time at all and the fact that i use the extra "flash memory" practically all the time with no complaints from them and the simplicity of installing things beats buying or building a box server lol. oh and the internet connection as also never shut off for me in the month ive had it which makes my friends who all get on at different times happy as i previously could only run the server when the three bar connection was good and not over used and dragging.
my first post is waaaay to long lol
EDIT: made slight changes to the whole thing as i noticed mistakes lol
I would, because I've always wanted to host a server, but with all the junk on this one, I can't support a server.
Would you?

No, Minecraft is just a ***** for CPU and RAM
Why would you want that virus on your computer?

Time is the factor for me of buying a new computer. I don't play minecraft like an addict so there no need of buying a new computer
