I love this update. There's so many awesome things to play around with, and it's been a blast discovering them all.
Now, my only complaint is: Why do all the trees still produce the same planks? I think that different tree types should produce different saplings and different plank types. I love the ashy look of the Birch tree, but the planks are the same light brown color that all planks are. Pine, being a darker colored tree, should be a deeper color plank. Birch should be a pale, almost white wood. And I'd love to be able to differentiate between the different tree types when I go to plant them.
This isn't a complaint, just a suggestion. The update is fantastic and I love all of it, but I hope that something like that comes about eventually because it'd be very cool to be able to plant a forest of Birches or have different hardwood floor types.
I agree! Especially the part about the different trees having different saplings.
But if different trees have different planks, will they make different looking wooden crafts (doors and fences and the like)? And also it would be mildly annoying that the different wood types wouldn't stack.

There are two types of people in the world: those who don't find this joke funny and those who are amused by self-referential humour.

Could you guys go five minutes without sigging me?
Yeah, it would be mildly annoying, but it'd make for some pretty cool customization. And if you had saplings for each individual tree type, you could pick and choose which ones to replant. I mean, okay, obviously, the wood would have to make the same tools, same workbench, and same sticks. But, it'd be cool if the actual planks looked different, and that was it. Once you've crafted it past planks, it recombines to the same recipe, but just different colored planks, basically.
Hell, I'd even just go for a dye for the wooden blocks. Like a Wood Polish you can make or something.
Guys there are limited blocks in minecraft. I do agree that we need 1 more plank type.
Ah, but the new trunk and wool recolours are done in a way that uses new texture space but not new block ids. Texture space is much easier to extend as needed than block ids. Plank recolours could be done similarly.
It's a good idea. I also think that saplings should be affected by biomes. Doesn't look right when your chopping dull leaves and it gives you a bright green sapling.

post it in the suggestions forum then?
I personally think different plank types would add more to the game for constructive purposes. It would look better to have a different wooden floor contrary(is this the right word?) to the walls.[/quote]
Aaaah, dammit, I completely forgot about that section.
Could I get a mod to move this thread into there?
Yeah, it wouldn't really serve much purpose except for decoration, I think. But, it'd be nice to have different types of wood for flooring, or make a completely wooden house that isn't the same color for the walls, ceiling and floor.
