I had a spider phase through one of the walls of my base, in broad daylight. Also, once a zombie spawned in full light in my base. I guess it just happens.
Hostile mobs spawn in light level of 7 or less. A torch gives off 14 in the square it is placed and decreases by one for every square the light has to travel from the torch.
Sunlight is 15 strength and floods any square directly open to the sky. However a dense group of trees or a deep overhang can cause spawnable light levels of 7 or below even during the daytime. Also a redstone torch on the floor makes that block a spawnable block because there is currently a lighting glitch where the redstone torch overrides the light levels around it causes the block it is on to revert to light level of 7 (which is what light level redstone torches give off).
If the OP posts some pics of problem areas we can probably spot some likely areas that are spawnable.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
That's why you put chandeliers above the saplings. It's not just cosmetics anymore.
