Can I burn wood to get light? If so, I'm up for it. You could easily do without coal by setting up a super productive tree farm and use planks to smelt and create light. With just a bucket and flint and steel it would be quite easy to go from nothing to a nether portal.
Sure you could but i thought that wood gets destroyed now even if you only lit one side?
Meh i am always wrong.
you can make wood that burns forever, i've got it all over my mine and outside before i ever made a portal..
set down a wood, surround it with cobblestone, light the wood - wait just a second or two and then start removing the stone around it. - done.
I have read rumours (maybe truths?) that Nether portals can potentially spawn without being built, rare but possible. I have got a random Nether gate in my world which I have no recollection of. So it may be easy if you just explore lots.
There's a bug that can create a new portal when you die in the Nether.
With extreme patience and cleverness, you could actually create a Nether portal without doing anything in a crafting grid. Here's how:
1) Punch a staircase down to a lava cave section (not a lake, they're not deep enough)
2) Punch out a bunch of sand/gravel to fill in parts of the lava
3) Use the sand/gravel from step 2 to fill in all but a portal-frame-shape
4) Punch out a canal from the sea to your staircase, flooding all around the little bit of lava that's left
5) Punch out the last stuff around the portal-frame-shape of enclosed lava, and watch water turn it to obsidian
6) Punch trees for logs, and make a fuse of logs from the portal frame to some remaining lava in another part of the lava cave section (alternately, you could punch sheep for their wool)
7) Watch said fuse burn, eventually bringing fire to your portal frame. Ta-da!
That being said, I'm in no hurry to try this.

Sanity is a carrot. You find it green and easy to find, but the deeper you go, it turns funny colors and narrows down to nothing.
I have just tried. Just keep digging and nothing spawns behind you. (except for one skelly that nearly killed me)
