hello!
I just started a new world, and i loved it. there was a cliff close to my spawn, more than enough trees (millions of them). I always wanted to make my house on the side of a cliff. After a few days, my world got destroyed by a savage forest fire. I couldnt understand! was it a burning zombie who lit up a tree? i didnt think that was possible. Heres a pic of my world now.
I think the source of the problem was the lava spring on the right. during the second minecraft day, i walked close by of the lava, so it must have been then when it generated. i think ill continue with that map and take down all of the burning trees.
ill have a video up soon.
EDIT:
Heres the video, which shows really how bad it was.

Delete everything in the WorldX folder except for level.dat, your world will be recreated the exact same. Then quit out and use MCEdit to remove the lava spring, or run over to where it is before it can burn everything down and contain the fire.
There are a few pretty simple solutions that Notch could do.
1) Update the way fire works to make it eventually destroy all flammable blocks except netherrock, so we don't have those stupid floating burning logs everywhere after the fire.
2) During world generation, remove all flammable material within burning distance of the lava, so the only forest fires would come from players being stupid, not from random chance.

Or remove surface lava springs altogether. They make no sense, cause problems, and it's easy to find lava within a few minutes of mining.
the video has been uploaded. Just look at the first post.
also, i think i might stick with this world. Ive got already lots of saplings (before the fire), so i think ill cut down most of the burning logs, then plant o few trees here and there.
Thankfully I haven't encountered any trouble with 'em yet
I have found them but no trouble but DAMN thats a big fire.
I've started bigger ones, yet I have no proof, for I am terrible with uploading pics.
Same thing happened to me, and since I'm an explorer and like to name places, then since the lava lake is near a rose area, I called it "Burning Rose County."
I think Notch should keep surface lava springs. Forest fires in real life aren't all man made, and in the game it should be the same way. "Natural Disasters" make this game interesting, because they happen so rarely.

yes but maybe make it longer for the leaves to catch on fire. because there is simply no way to stop it.

I agree. The game needs more disasters. Keep the lava. I mean. I have a similar problem. It took me awhile to clear all the wood. But it's good because I have light at night. Plus the piggies would drop pork with no effort.
I'd like Notch to just fix fire already. If it burns down a tree, have the fires go out on the remaining logs and remove the floating ones. I don't care if there's a remnant of the tree remaining, hell, I'd prefer it that way - the fire just needs to stop. It's a massive drain on CPU, and the floating logs just look ugly.
They're actually quite useful. For easy mob slaughtering, simply stand on a block in the middle of the lava spring. Stupid mobs will swarm to your current position, creating lulz for the whole family to enjoy!
Kinda hard to see, and I've already removed half of it...
It's not as big as it could have been, though. When it first happened, it was triggered as I was exploring caves beneath the lava spring. Shortly after, my world was corrupted, so I had to revert to a backup, which was before the fire was triggered. Since i knew where the spring was, I managed to isolate the grove where the spring was, and (somewhat) contained the fire by removing connecting leaves ahead of it... Now it's my log farm. :smile.gif:
Aw, my flint 'n' steel forest fire is nothing compared to yours. D:
Altleast you get lots of bacon, I love it how mobs just stupidly run into your fires.
Look on the bright side now you can see at night, baddies wont spawn, those pesky farm animals that are sooo annoying will burn >:biggrin.gif:, and you'll have a unlimited supply of wood!

The only surface lava springs I have are isolated etc, so I have no problems.

And...well...there needs to be rain in this game.
just because you're correct doesnt mean you're right
Above statement is false.
P.S I like the furnace :smile.gif:
From the ground
Yeah, they do suck.
anyway that really sucks i hope it never happens to me.
