People say the way I mine is very inefficient and silly. I will dig a staircase into the ground and dig a space 2 block high. I will then continue to hollow it out, keeping it only 2 blocks high. After I'm content for that level, (the lower down i go, usually the larger it is) I dig down until 3 blocks separate the floors and I repeat.
it will look like:

So how inefficient is this? I know it's kind of like strip mining, in a sense, just without that HUGE hole.
My mineshaft hits bedrock and then opens into a room at the bottom with my mini-base set up and some boxes from there it opens into the 'main shaft' running from one block above bedrock for my floor, about 10 wide at the base and going up to level 16 for my roof, I mine out of the side walls in two directions like this :

Each 'floor' is set back two wider, so the room has an epic V shape to it, wider at the top, I've been thinking of adding collums and such to make it even more grand looking but I've been playing my new game sence beta dropped :tongue.gif: Between clearing the back face to add more rows and diggnig out the tunnles I keep pritty well stocked with stone and anything else I need.

Everybody shut up! Now, where'd you get those cool hats?
I go straight down to 15 blocks above the bedrock and then make a hub which branches out into separate long NSWE "combs." Strip mining is for people that are building super structures; if you're doing it to find minerals/valuables then you should probably try something else.
This technique also allows a good mix of spelunking too (and you're always where you want to be when you hit a cave; right next to the area where you usually find all of the good stuff). Getting lost or stranded also rarely happens.
I usually look for lava and dig around it. Dunno how diamond spawns but in most of the videos I have seen on YouTube there is usually diamond in the giant rooms with lava in them.
Havent been able to play for awhile so Im not sure if you still find them in those rooms.

I'm usually not trying to be rude. So if a post comes across that way then sorry :]
I Branch Mine which means Mining to a side. I Mineshaft which means Mine straight down. I also make stairs which is how I found my first dungeon and most of my Cave Systems.
this thread is very inspiring, i do branch mining like this [] [] [] [] [] [] [] []
thats level 11-15. i do the branches 50 long right and left from my mainshafts. and the main minechafts go right and left from my office. the entraice is a staircase with minecart track, have booster at the office. when the mainshafts reach 90blocks i take the torches and shout them, and ehter expend from the office forward 100 blocks and then make new mainshafts right and left, or i just shut down the whole thing and start somewhere else. i donn now yet, i havendt got that long yet. i also do spekolaiting sometime, but i die so mutch so i rahter lose more then i gain from that.
