In heavy forest its dips to around 10 or so, but with view distance on normal or small the game stays right around 25-40fps, which is enough to keep away the studder.

yeah same was true for me, for bout 10 minutes, then everything droped back to 8 FPS.....i even tryed a new world, and samething happened, after 5 minutes fps was down to 10...
Holy crap I just realized this!!!!! I just updated to 1.1_02 and it is 99999999999999999999999999999999x better!!!
Alpha 1.2.6, I was getting between 18 and 30fps. Beta release, oh god.... between 4 and 12. Beta 1.1_02, I now have 80+fps and I'm using a LAPTOP with INTEGRATED GRAPHICS.
ummm... interesting, I still have choppy FPS and even when standing still in one spot for 2 minutes I was still getting 50+ chunk updates... ima try delete the whole folder and download it again...

Really? I'm playing on a desktop with integrated graphics and I can't get above 20 FPS unless I sit still and look at the sun.

Glad he got it fixed though, definitely a big fps boost.
Now I can play without worry of the game crashing every few minutes.
