I was inspecting the copyright info and I notice something peculiar that contradicted what notch said. You can read it yourself, this is quoted directly from minecraft.net.
What you get for purchasing
Please note that Minecraft is currently a work in progress and NOT a finished product! The sandbox mode available right now. However, you may buy a discounted beta account today, which will also include the full game!
As we at Mojang continue to release more complete builds of the game, we will also be reducing the discount gradually until we reach the final version and full price of the product. So the earlier you buy, the better value you get! Although we are very passionate about this project, we cannot guarantee that it will be completed - that's why we offer the discounted price When you purchase the game, you pay for it as it is right now. Future updates are an added bonus.
He just means that you will recieve access to the full game if it ever gets there.
Yes, but on tumblr he says
We will also change the license to remove the line that promises all future versions of the game for free. Please note that this change only affects people who buy the game after December 20, so if you got the game for during alpha, you will still get all future updates for free, despite this change. A promise is a promise.
Buying the game during beta will include all updates up until release, of course, and bug patches will be free.
Umm... you thought that meant if you buy beta you don't get the release version? Obviously you do. It means you don't get all future expansions for free.

IF you buy the game once the game is beta. Please learn to read.

This. Too many people are misunderstanding what Notch had said.
I'm pretty sure if you buy beta you get the final version. But notch said he was changing that. Opinions?
Seriously? There's no opinions needed here, you obviously get the full version of the game if you buy beta. Full stop. You just don't get Minecraft 2: The Reckoning.

"Can't post on tumblr. :-( Anyway, buying during beta = get everything up to and including release version for free. Expansions might cost."
Just because it's not in the legal document doesn't mean he can't do it. He could, for all he cares, release everything post launch for free without putting it in the legal stuff. Or he can put this in the leagal stuff
"Expansions after the game is released might cost money. Or they might not." and boom. He's perfectly safe from people who want to sue because, for awhile at least.
ok, explenation.
if you bought in alpha, you get the final and everything past final for free.
if you buy in beta, you get the final for free, but then you have to re-buy to get updates to the final.
if you buy in final, derp.

Not exactly. If you buy in beta then theres a chance you get the Alpha treatment.
This happened with Mount and Blade. I purchased it early and was promised all updates for free. When they made a major overhaul and released Mount and Blade: Warband I would have to purchase that separately as it is considered it's own game.
