I am not sure if anyone here have played a game called populous.
Said shortly it is a game where you control a shaman and build a base. What was unique with this game
was that you had the ability to change your surroundings, much like minecraft. What I really liked about the game
was that the map was shaped like a sphere. Like the earth. Meaning you could never get out of bounder.
The maps were not that big, but it really felt allot bigger.
So it would be awesome if minecraft levels could be shaped like spheres.
Caves could still have infinite dropping holes at the bottom.
OR have the ability to mine your way through earth ( Which would be insanely awesome, one of my child dreams coming true )
Problems I see with this change is that maps need to be a tiny bit bigger i guess. Or make the sphere smaller.
Spherical worlds would not work with Minecraft's cube basis. The blocks would either have to become thinner as they approached the center, or else not line up.
Wrapping's an odd idea. I mean, the game world is so massive, I don't see it being an issue. Unless you constrained the world to be smaller, which is a bad idea.
The shape of the blocks wouldn't be a problem, gravity would.
You can have cubes in a sphere, but when you dig, "down" would be based on the angle that you make with the center of the planet. This would make you go diagonally if you aren't at a one of the poles or the equator.
Just simulate a sphere. Once you get far enough to one edge, the generator would take the opposite edge and make the edge you are on look exactly the same. Any blocks placed or removed would also be done on the other side. So once you get like halfway through the "edge" area, you are teleported to the other one. But you can't tell. And you can dig through earth somehow. Yea.

This post has given me an intriguing idea. If Minecraft is about blocks... Why not make the world a cube? Ha-ha, that would be most excellent.

Because figuring out the threshold for switching gravity at edges would be an outright *****. And we all know that people would purposly seek out the corners where 3 faces meet to build something out of the mind of M.C. Escher. Now while that, in itself might be reason enough to do it, that whole matter of coding gravity to work that way would have its share of challenges.

Or do you mean like it wraps around, and the map would be shown on a globe?

Might I be so bold as to suggest looping along the north-south axis as well, effectively creating a torus-shaped world?
