The most painful thing about mining in Minecraft is walking into a dark hallway, and placing a torch only to see a Creeper appear right in front of me out of the darkness and explode.
Naturally if humans go into a deep dank dark cave, they will shoot a flare to see how far it goes and if anything dangerous is there.
Torches should be able to be thrown. How I'm not sure, maybe right-clicking. I don't know.
The torch travels some distance, about half to three-fourths of an arrow's travel distance. The torch when it's grand journey is finished, will last 5 seconds before burning out and becoming useless.
This could add a safety precaution.
Lose a torch (and valuable coal) to potentially keep you from falling into a Mob or see if that hole is deeper than you thought it was.
I wish you could just hold a torch so it can illuminate as you move.
And fire arrows shouldn't be able to burn someones house down, Couch_Radish. If it did, then it would be too overpowered. My idea of fire arrows was burn damage to players or mobs, and it did no damage to terrain.

Of course there's probably a discussion on Fire Arrows but if such a thing was implemented it makes sense to be able to use it to light distances far away from you. As OP said, it would last 5 seconds before the fire burns out.
The only problem I see with this would be the rapid change in light values on all the nearby blocks as the torch arcs through the air. I'm not too certain on the details, but from what I've seen on the forum, it seems like a big no-no. If this were to work at all, the torch would not be able to light until it completed its trajectory. This is assuming you wanted the torch lighting up the area as it passes through the air.
I have no cohesive ideas on this, but perhaps one could craft a different item somewhat like a flare that would be thrown, and at the end of its trajectory, ignite for a few seconds so that you could see the area, and then be exhausted and go away in a puff of smoke.

Everything he said is exactly my opinion on your pitch op
I really like it because earlier I ran into a cave that had a huge hole that went very deep. I had to climb down to the bottom only to find that it was a dead end w/ no minerals and a waste of my time/picks
If I was able to throw a torch down there I wouldnt blocked it up and never wasted my time.
Until(if) we have moveable lights, then it can illuminate in transit. Simply being a stick in air then illuminating where it lands would be a useful ability.
Lighting up where it lands would be interesting, and confusing.
Not only that but what you're proposing is so much better, you're basically proposing that we should be able to throw a torch and that when it lands it lights up the area for a while and then fizzes out, this tactic would make people think twice before doing this thus forcing people to still explore properly. His idea is just that when ever you manually drop the item, it just lights op. That doesn't sound challenging nor fun. And as you said, it could interfere with trading stuff for torches or just giving them away.
I really like this idea and it could be accomplished easily. Someone else pointed out that right-click is already taken, but left-click could be used for a new function. Really it would just require giving the torch some properties of TNT (not the exploding ones).
Left-click will throw the torch, turning it into a gravity-affected entity like primed TNT. Instead of exploding after a couple of seconds it just "burns out" (disappears).
You know what else is a problem? Spiders being the only creature to give an item, that is only needed in a certain quantity, I propose killing two birds with one stone.
People have suggested fire arrows, and I think that is the best way to make a long range light source, so here's my pitch.
You craft a normal arrow, and a normal torch, then you put the arrow on the bottom slot, the torch on the top, and here's the kicker, a string in the middle to tie the two together, you now have a torch arrow, it would either light its path then break upon impact, or place a torch (temporary or permanent) where it lands without giving light as it moves.
Edit: These arrows do not deal extra damage, or set things on fire, they are not intended as a weapon, but as a tool. However they could be used to set off tnt from a distance.

This isn't for combat purposes, just for lighting an area without getting near it.

Maybe not if he used the same design as arrows.
Either way I like your idea, and yes same design as arrows in deed
I had a similar idea for a thrown, temporary light-- a flash bomb. Check out this thread and tell me what you think.

I looked at the thread, and I think it is an excellent idea. Never thought of using gunpowder.
Gunpowder only affiliates with explosions in my mind, but how you would use it is an excellent idea.
look at this picture.

Do correct me if i am wrong.
