Playing in singleplayer mode is a bit boring right now. Considering mobs don't pose a threat when you're in a well lit, reasonably sealed structure doors become only useful for keeping wandering mobs out when you're away.
I propose that, while zombies still spawn in the dark, they are attracted to light and will beat on walls/doors/windows to try and get in. They would take 3 times as long to break objects as the player, but shouldn't be able to beat down stone or stronger materials. They could break through windows, wooden walls, wooden doors, and other soft materials given enough time. This would actually make iron doors useful for keeping out monsters rather than just other human players.
I agree with this, but I think zombies should be able to break anything, including cobblestone, mossy cobblestone, brick walls, iron doors, etc... but it would take a lot longer to them destroy it.
a little unfair. They are zombies, so their body is alot weaker than that of a Minecrafian. Their damageable items should be limited to anything wood planks or weaker

Creepa stole ma bike. [SSSS]
Sooo... when's the next seecret Friday update topic going up? =[
I've always wanted enemies to be able to break down doors/walls, but I think this would be better suited to the new version that Notch said he's going to make. I believe it was called something the along the lines of "zombie survival".
Although I can see something like this happening while you are mining:

Perhaps there should be a valuable item which only appears outside at night. That way, it will encourage people to leave their homes. I don't like the idea that mobs can destroy your house to be honest, if any safety in the game is possible, its between walls.
Why would a zombie break down a door if it didn't know you were inside?
I propose that they only break down doors if they're already following you/can see you.

You are totally thinking about this signature right now. Read a book.

I was suggesting that they would be attracted to non-natural light sources, like torches. Where there is unnatural light, there are usually humans; the monsters should be at least that smart. That doesn't mean they would start trying to beat down your door to get into the light; they would just have a greater chance of seeing a player and then chasing them if they ventured outside after nightfall.
breaking though stone seems more annoying then anything, wood i get, glass i get, dirt i can understand. but as it stands now the undead and creepers seem to know where i am in my base even when they cannot see me. i hear them above me walkign as i walk, i have had them follow me from my main door, to my light house ( a good 2 minute walk, and im underground) and sure enough he takes a little longer but the same creeper has folloed me to hell and back.
i do agree that there needs to be a way of either making going out a night worth the effort, or having staying home become hazordas.
also as a side note, i do not like the fact they would attack light. i have alot of structures that i currently dont have connected to my base, so at night i cant get to safly, i also have my very bright, very big, becon tower (used to locate my base from anywhere within render distence) plus i add torches to things i build for both light and look, to have to repair my entire base every night because they attack it would drive me to never building another above ground object.
Breaking down doors and week materials is would be cool for 'em... Don't know about being attracted to light, though. Then again, I really don't have an argument, so... Yeah.

Are you always so pessimistic?
Yes, yes I am. A pessimist is always either right, or pleasantly surprised.

Egads..this is World of Warcraft meets Battlefield 1942 in a dark alley with way too much to drink and no discarded mattress nearby.

Or, creepers can be content blowing the hell up a mass of player-built objects. Normal rules of course apply, soft materials are torn apart, hard materials (wood/cobbley!) not so much, near-indestructables (iron/gold) probably not at all.
But yeah, them breaking down objects with 3x the timer is grand. Though, if more zombies are breaking down the same object, does the time go down proportionatley?

This would just make me build my houses out of stone/live underground. I really don't like dealing with zombies/spiders/creepers. Especially spiders. Things can jump for miles.
Imagine it. Zombie breaks down your door. Creepers pour in. Death.

So I'm not the best voice for everyone.
How about this only happens on hard mode?
Then I would ONLY play hard.

Not harder materials like stone/iron, though. But wood and glass they can break down.
