What about magnet blocks can't move any block, but iron blocks. This would make sense wouldn't it? What if I don't want to push, I want to pull? They're magnets for crying out loud, right? Well, I really like this idea. But maybe I'd rather they also be able to push and pull iron blocks cuz that just makes sense. If you are okay with that.
Also, with a magnet block, sticky pistons should hold onto the block it has. There is talk about the coming of a rotating block that rotates. Imagine if a sticky piston would hang on to the block, but a magnet block wouldn't... just so there is a difference between the two, for the sake of there being a difference--at least one of the many differences.
But also imagine this. What if a magnet can be turned on and off as well as the piston being pushed in and out with red-stone... I wonder how this could work. We could turn the magnet off, and say with sand it would drop. An iron block could some how pull the sand in and then drop it? ............. well anyways I'm trying to see the vision. Its 4:00AM here where I am. Very late. Very tired.
And on a second note, sometimes people need to just mellow out. I swear people try to make this more their game than anyone Else's. Just cuz they see no point or no reason to have it they got to shut down the idea. After all, minecraft was only made for them right? Well other people might find allot of uses for this magnet piston. Its one of those things you play with and experiment with and find what new things you can do with it.
Its strange cuz every idea that comes out people shut it down assuming there is nothing that can be done with it... which is dumb to do. Cuz like anything in mine craft? None of us started out as prodigies. We had to experiment and learn and grow in the game to find what each item and block did. We weren't pro's overnight.
Point is, we can't at all say there is no purpose to a magnet piston (he's certainly got to really explain and help us see that this is useful for the sake of helping us all understand what fun this piston could deliver to the table) cuz what if it did come out--and all of you non-believers see it in the game, play with it for a bit, find that it does some really cool stuff. Bet you'd be kicking yourselves.
Besides, a carrot is in the freaking game people. How much use does that have? Rose bushes? Decoration? Whoopty-do. Hey, this may server allot of purpose. Lets give it a chance.
Being a nerd is nothing to be ashamed of. Nerds rule the world! Who invented the internet? Nerds. Who created personal computers and smart phones? Nerds. Who made every video game you've ever played and ever will? Still nerds. Who sent probes to distant planets? Nerds, nerds and more nerds! I'm a nerd and I'm proud.
Or maybe an iron block surrounded by 8 redstone dust creates one magnet?
woah woah woah it doesn't let you control the universe its only used to move other magnets
i think a iron ingot surrounded by redstone would be a good recipe (maybe have it craft 2 or 4 blocks at once )
i like the idea of a block only able to move one kind of block (2 if iron blocks get moved too and they should) i haven't use slime blocks yet but the fact they move any piston-able block in a area
ANYWAY! to sum up my rambling 1+ SUPPORT!

This makes some sense, but maybe certain sides have certain attractions, such as Side A and Side A would push eachother away when Block 1 is pushed towards Block 2. If Block 1 is pulled, Block 2 will not move until a attractive side is faced towards Block 1. When Side A and Side B are facing eachother, Block 2 will become like a Falling Sand/Gravel entity and slide towards Block 1 until they meet. Maybe a new Rotator Block would turn the Magnet, or when a Direct Redstone Signal is applied (such as a Redstone Block being pushed next to it), it will rotate 90 Degrees.
Blocks could also be assigned magnetic values, such as Cobblestone will not attract as much (If at all) as a Block of Iron. The higher the magnetism, the faster a block will move towards the Magnet, and any magnetic block (not the Magnet Block) will be attracted to any side to avoid being anymore complicated than I may have just made it.
Also, on a side note, I really love this idea, and was wondering if I could use this concept in my (Heavily Under Development) Mod. Credit would be given, and for anymore discussion please contact me here. I hope to work with you soon!
*facepalm* Just because you don't understand something doesn't make it have no purpose. An easily seen purpose is having multiple blocks move within a confined space to make a really compact T-flip flop; with slime blocks, they wouldn't move.
I understand it, and I still do not think it has a purpose. There is no need for it not to mention it really would not fit minecraft.
Fine. My reasoning for all future suggestion rebuttals will be: It does not fit.
There is no reason why something doesn't fit. How does it not fit? Is magnetism something that is too arcane? Why are there creepers? They don't fit! Just saying something does not fit without giving a reason why it doesn't fit adds something to the discussion.

Both of you make some valid arguments. Redstone has to fit because it was designed for the game and hasn't been used before anywhere else. Magnets would make sense because, just as you said, how would compasses work without magnetism, but also, would the spawn chunks be considered Minecraft's north pole? Because that is where Minecraft compasses always point, and real-life compasses always point towards the north pole.
What I'm trying to say is that magnets could fit just as easily as other things. No need to get into a major debate over the entire thing.
and why does it need to fit anyway? why does it need a use? why not something utterly useless that is meant only for fun? after all it is a game and they are meant to be fun...

Some games have a theme, and if people think something doesn't fit said theme it won't make the game fun anymore.
Almost everyone has their own idea for the theme of Minecraft. Some based on factual evidence, some just off of their opinions. This causes a lot of conflicts in the Minecraft community. This is an example of that.

Wouldn't it? Why does redstone fit but magnetics don't? How would a compass work if there wasn't any magnetism?
Redstone does not fit.
