OK. Gold tools are completely worthless in Minecraft and we all know that. But what if they weren't? Isn't that just mind blowing?
I'm suggesting that there be certain benefits to having tools made of gold.
1. Gold Tools Can be Enchanted Twice Taking a page from Thaumcraft's book gold tools could be enchanted twice. I don't think this is game-breaking as gold tools have terrible durability so for those precious few hits you do get they could do an impressive amount of damage. Now things like Sharpness would stack so that if you had every enchantment possible on a sword enchanting it again wouldn't be worthless. To prevent it from being overpowered it would only stack to 7 or 8. Also, if you got one enchantment on a tool, for instance, Sharpness, you would have a much lesser chance of getting that same enchantment again. in this case, instead of getting Sharpness, you would be much more likely to get Bane of Arthropods or Smite.
2. Enchantability Judges Strength of Enchantment As the name suggests, this idea is not strictly gold related but is instead an improvement that applies to anything that can be enchanted. There is a number that is given to every piece of armor, tool, and weapon in Minecraft and that number is it's enchantability. The enchantability of an item is what level of enchantment an item gets. For instance, a stone tool has the lowest enchantability of any item whereas gold is the highest. My idea is that for each level of enchantability an item has, the enchantment that item gets will be better. For instance, a stone tool's enchantment will not be as good as a diamond tool's enchantment and a diamond tool's will not be as good as a gold's. Now the base level would be ten and from there on up the base power would get higher while downward the inverse would happen. For each level, a tool's power would either increase or decrease by .025%. That means an iron pickaxe with efficiency will mine things .1% faster than the diamond pickaxe's efficiency. The diamond will still mine faster than the iron but the iron will get more of a boost than the diamond will. This means gold will get a .375% better boost on enchantments than a diamond will. The enchantability table can be found here. http://minecraft.gam...tment_mechanics
3. Certain Gold-Exclusive Enchantments My last suggestion would be that there are, like the header, certain gold exclusive enchantments. Now there wouldn't be very many and the enchantments could be found in dungeons and strongholds as enchanted books, (A book could NOT be enchanted to get one of these gold-exclusive enchantments) so that if you really wanted to, you could have the perfect Diamond Sword. For instance, one of the enchantments could be something along the lines of Greed. This sword would cause more XP to drop from mobs if killed with a sword that had Greed. One a friend of mine suggested was an enchantment for a sword that caused lightning to strike whatever mob it hit. I wasn't so sure about that. Another one that I really liked was an enchantment that gave you two of anything you mined as long as it hadn't been placed by a player. (The Aether did it, why can't Mojang?) Below are a list of possible gold exclusive enchantments and anymore ideas are appreciated.
Greed: More XP drops from mobs (10% more?) Venomous: Applies poison for 4 seconds. I tested this one and 4 seconds was the perfect balance. Fleeting: A boot enchantment that makes you run about 10% faster. Guarding: Halves damage when blocking. The amount of damage you would take whenever a hit gets through defense when you block with a sword will be halved.
Hydration: Hydrates farmland and only applies to hoes, obviously.
4. Other misc. changes...
Of course, there are changes that don't go into any other category that could be useful...
1. Gold is now able to mine any ore other than obsidian. Fortune is now useful!
2. Gold ore can now be found in smaller patches, although retaining the rarity. This is just to make sure that the tools aren't overpowered, while retaining most of the ideas that have been represented on this thread.
3. Gold tools cost a small amount of Lapis Lazuli more than other tools. Just to keep things balanced.
And that's my suggestion folks! If you don't like it, tell me why and suggest what you would change to make it better. Please no "ur idea suks cuz there aint no gold its 0nly budder" Also, hope I'm not being repetitive but I didn't find any other topics that matched mine so.... Well anyway thanks for reading! Also, special thanks to DarkStar364 for having some pretty good discussion, spideh for defending my ideas, reaverofdarknes1 for reminding me that gold can't mine diamonds, and to everyone who said the Heated enchantment was bad because looking back, it kind of was.
Oh hey. Looks like you're reading my signature. That's nice. If you thought I was going to put something funny here, I'm not. I will however put a link to my suggestion about gold tools. I think it's fairly popular. It would be nice if it was added. Just click the link and look at it. Please? I'm desperate. http://www.minecraft...-arent-useless/
I think gold is perfectly fine as it is. Im not saying this isnt well thought out, as this is the best thought out gold upgrade suggestion ive seen so far, but gold is meant to be a trophy weapon. Plus the tools actually mine faster than diamond. Gold also has the best enchantment rates out of all types.
Gold is fine as it is, but if were to be changed I would be fine with this.

My train of thought was, "If you're going to have golden tools, at least make them useful in some capacity." I figured they would be more of an end game item because of how expensive enchanting is plus the fact that it would be much more economical if you enchanted your diamond tools. However when you enchant your diamond tools it's more of a risk because you have the chance to get something like Bane of Arthropods on a sword. I figured if you royally screwed up on a gold sword it wouldn't matter as much as on a diamond one. BTW thanks for the feedback, I had been thinking about this for a long time and just recently made an account so I figured I would put it up!

(The Aether did it, why can't Mojang?)
Just because a popular mod has something doesn't mean it belongs in vanilla... It's not that Mojang can't do it, they just haven't and won't.Gold tools already have their buffs of mining speed and enchantibility. Though a few more buffs to gold wouldn't hurt us.
I'm not seeing a good reason for the smelt enchantment, as that's rather redundant and hurts the point of easy-to-make furnaces.

Everyone seems to have some concerns about this so I will try to handle them all here.
Theriasis: I didn't specifically mean that exact enchantment I just meant something that wouldn't be completely insane but would give a small benefit. Also, the thing about the Aether being able to do it was for anyone who said that was impossible. I'm not exactly a coding whiz so I took an example from a popular mod that people would know about so they could see it was possible.
Eli_8: They enchant only slightly better so you're levels would be spent much more wisely on a diamond tool.
DarkStar634: Gold tools are (to me and in their current state) pretty pitiful. They have far too few uses to be considered and the gold required to make them would be much better spent in making a beacon, golden apples, or golden carrots which are the only uses I consider useful. You may have a different opinion but to me gold tools would be used much better if they could have great enchantments.
dc949: I tried to put in as many things as I could to make sure that gold tools were useful but not overpowered. I completely understand where you're coming from though and yes it could but it would take quite a bit of luck to get two good enchantments.

Gold tools already have the highest enchantability out of all the tool tiers, but the way this suggestion is implemented stops them from becoming OP. If this was added into the game, I wouldn't complain.
Gold isn't good for making tools out of to be honest so it makes sense why they would break fast.
I'm not arguing that they would break fast. In fact, that's practically the cornerstone of my suggestion. It's what makes the whole thing balanced! The fact that the tools may be amazing, but they won't be amazing for very long is what makes gold more interesting than the other materials.

Support.
Thanks! If you have any suggestions I would love to hear them, or if you have any questions I could probably answer them. Also, was the way I presented this clear? Was it easy to understand or do I need to clarify on somethings?

Anyways, I do feel gold tools are rather underused, because their rarity conflicts with their usefulness. Even enchanted with unbreaking III, they are still less durable than the wooden tier. The only time I made a golden pickaxe was to put in an item frame for decoration.

Exactly! This would give them much more of a use while preventing them from being overpowered. Also, i don't exactly see 33 uses as a lot. Look at iron. Or even diamonds for that matter.

Yes, I agree that gold tools need to be buffed just a little bit, but this is not the way to go with it. #1 could get quite overpowered, #3 I don't agree with at all, though #2 I could support. However I think that the enchantability index could affect this instead, so that it applies towards other tiers.
It's an interesting way to go about making gold tools actually useful and functional, the only issue I see though is that it's all based around enchanting. I do think that these would be decent improvements for the otherwise useless tool tier, but I'd personally just rather see them having a durability at least a bit higher than wood. However, that's just my opinion, but what you have here would be a decent start for the gold tier to actually have reason to even exist.
So I guess you have my support for the most part.

"A sword yields no power if the person who wields it holds no courage."
Gold's enchantability is really only useful for niche tools; things like respiration helmets.
Consider a pick-axe: Even if you had a monster enchantment on it, it only has wood strength mining -- so I'm not sure if it can manage any ores at all.
Speed? Yes, but how often do you need that very minor increase in speed over diamond -- and how many efficiency diamond picks do you have lying around?
What if you had something special for gold tools?
1. What if gold actually had a different set of enchantments -- perhaps silk touch would be common for gold picks, and even work on blocks it would not normally work on. (Sure, that diamond pick will harvest the diamond ore, but the gold silk touch pick will give you a diamond ore block, even if it cannot harvest the diamond out of the block). Perhaps a gold axe can harvest a tree. Etc.
2. I like the idea of gold tools being able to hold more enchantments, or higher levels of enchantments. I do think that a "Harder mining level" enchantment would help -- one level to upgrade from gold/wood to stone, two levels to upgrade to iron, etc.
(In regard to a mod that gives realistic animal genetics):
Would you really rather have bees that make diamonds and oil with magical genetic blocks?
