Can't people use a fully upgraded normal bow to "troll"?
I'd use it in single player, that's all I play after all.
Sniping can be fun, and useful; don't see why it wouldn't be.
And the upgrade isn't that huge, though I think the full crafting grid w/ 8 leather should be used rather than 3.
Maybe part of the idea is to add more variety and fun to Minecraft, not necessity. I always welcome that. ^^
I sorta agree with you that you shouldn't be able to one-hit a mob that can't see you. As it's a more powerful bow, maybe it needs more powerful arrows? (increasing crafting costs)
That's just my 2 cents, tho.
Intriguing idea about the more powerful arrows, though I'm not sure how that would affect the balancing of the bow itself. But you could argue, though, that since the bow itself is more powerful that the normal arrows would 'break' upon using them (in any other sense). Possibly some sort of recipe using Iron? It seems there's an abundance of it, and it could be a good workaround for making some new arrows.
This seems overpowered, useless, and completely unnecessary.
The regular bow is fine. It shoots far, can be enchanted to be deadly. The ONLY reason we would need a stronger/longer ranged bow is to snipe other players, which a) isn't what Minecraft is about and sorta overpowered. Not to mention will only be used to troll on servers.
Ranged weapons shouldn't have the range and power to instantly kill a mob that hasn't even noticed you. Either have the mob close enough to see you and instant-kill it, or have it far away and take several shots. Not both.
I conclude.
Cons:
- Only used in multiplayer
- Only used for sniping, which isn't useful
- Easy to craft for a huge upgrade
- Unnecessary
Pros:
- Greater variety and customization of ranged weapons
- Enables two different ranged weapons for two different purposes

I understand your argument regarding the normal bow being just fine, but this topic is about giving the players an option, much like how melee combat gives in terms of the kinds of swords. I do however not understand your argument of 'that's not what Minecraft is about'. The game is what the players make it. For me, Minecraft is all about building and exploring new worlds. But for some of my friends Minecraft is all about PvP and getting new ranks. It's all about opinion on that front, and while I do respect it, I disagree.
And to me the upgrade isn't all that huge. It deals a mere heart-half more than the normal bow, and although the polls said yes to both enchantments I'm considering leveling the playing field and disallowing Punch II and Power V, and only allowing Punch I and Power IV and lower. It would balance it a bit more while still allowing the Strongbow to be a viable upgrade.

The only thing i don't like about this idea is that it does hearts of damage when fully drawn, I think it should only do

I've been thinking of changing it to only 5 1/2 hearts, but I haven't been able to come up with a good reason why it would give players an incentive to make the strongbow other than dying it.
