(I must apologize first off for the lack of images in this thread, as I'm not very good at creating anything catchy or worthwhile in that department. I will however have recipes. I also apologize if this has been suggested before, and if it has please refer me to the topic using a link and I will request a lock if it's redundant.)
UPDATE: 6/26/2014 - Added enchantment poll, working on example sprites UPDATE: 8/28/2014 - Changed crafting recipe, considering creating new arrows (?), added example sprites by Humpy123 and SparkyWasabi
Bows are one of the most popular ranged weapons in the game, so I thought there should be a couple more options for our beloved arrow-shooter. I propose that players have the option to bind their bows with leather using a crafting table to increase its durability, power and range. The way this would be done is using the crafting table and surrounding the bow with leather like so:
Using a fresh bow (it must have full durability) along with leather in the crafting grid will result in a Strongbow (name of the actual bow still undecided). The strongbow has increased base durability and increased base power.
Comparison of the Strongbow and the normal bow:
Bow
Base Damage Dealt: (when fully drawn)
Durability: 385 (approx. that many uses)
Strongbow
Base Damage Dealt: (when fully drawn)
Durability: 470 (approx. that many uses)
It deals a heart and a half more than the normal bow when fully drawn, and it's durability increases. The Strongbow's key difference, though, is that it can shoot farther than a normal bow. The downside to that ability is that the knocking of the arrow takes about a second-second and a half longer than the normal bow (meaning that drawing your arrow takes about a second or two longer), making it more for longer-ranged combat than the normal bow. Consider it the Longbow from medieval times in comparison to the Shortbow.
Along with the longer range comes a larger knockback. The Strongbow, when fully knocked, will knock the mob/animal/player hit one more block than the normal bow would at sufficient range and draw time.In addition to increased durability, knockback and base damage, you can also dye the Strongbow since the leather is now covering the wooded length. This is done as you would dye leather armor, like so:
As with leather armor, the grey center of the bow (where the arrow lies when knocked) will stay grey, but the wooded brown parts will become dyed with the color combination you choose. You can also remove the dye the same way you would remove the dye from leather armor: right click on a cauldron with water (without arrows in your inventory) and the dye will be removed.
Example sprites (by Humpy123 and SparkyWasabi, respectively):
Thank you for reading, and please, give me some constructive criticism! I hope I made my suggestion as clear and as balanced as possible.

Which when enchanted with the "Punch" enchantments it would even greater its knock back potential? Just imagine knockback III (Strongbow + Punch II)...
I guess the one question is; will Leather really make it stronger?
Anyway, I like your idea because you can dye it, and for its penalties for it being better then a normal bow without being to bad (i.e. better range, damage, durability, but longer draw).
Neat idea. I like the dying part more than the leather armor one, because bows are more common and this makes more sense, as leather isn't as plentiful as iron.

I think I'll support this. Support.
I can see your point with the Punch enchantment. While leather isn't that enchant-able it still is a bow through and through. I'll think on it and see about adding a section with what enchantments will do what when applied to the bow.

The idea was, basically, to give ranged players more options. I was originally going to suggest iron bows (but that's been done to death), and I just thought about dying bows, and this came into being. Leather not being as plentiful as iron was a player in it, though.
I like the idea. And here is a banner, that when clicked, leads you to this topic:
Hey, don't get yourself down on the banner. It's decent, but since it's hosted by a banner making site I don't think I would garner as many views to the topic if I used it. But thank you for the thought!
That's one of the many reasons I started the suggestion, was so we could have a bit more customization in how we look and fight, without completely revamping things. Glad you like the idea!
I really like this, may I make a banner. I forewarn you it has been forever sense I gimped up anything, so it might look good like c46 style stuff, but it should look good.
Go right ahead! You will be credited, so don't worry about that.
K, thanks. I'll have it done, only thing will be animated is the text, sorry bout that, not great at animating people yet. lol. I'm kinda multi-tasking, so it will be done in about 2 hours. sorry for the inconvenience. lol.
That's fine, whenever you can get it done. No rush.
Not the best as I'm only a fractal artist, make fractals. hence the fractal in the background. lol. I can remove the words, or change them up. Not sure what to call it, so I figure it would lead them here if it said something cool, like "Shoot Your Way" i;e, shoot the way you want with the bow you want.
800 x 200, as always. hope that is not too big.
Looks good! I'll put it up on the OP. You may want to add the topic's title in there somewhere (Strongbows, Leather-Bound Bows, something like that) so that people get an idea what it is.
I was trying to think of a catchy name looking at the topic title, it was kinda long and couldn't really as this is about bows. also to me it looks to big, should I shrink it. This is yours after all. Just thought I'd ask before editing, I can fit the whole topic but not a lot of people like words on a sig/banner.
Oh, that's okay. It was just a suggestion, the banner works well as it is. Thank you again for it!
As for the size, it could use a small bit of shrinking, but as of now it fits wonderfully in a signature.
Umm, definitely a BIG NO.
It's anyways a bad idea, and new bows will probably never be added.
It would be nice if you would tell me why the bows would be a bad idea. What do they take away, and how do they throw off the balance of things? It's not a very good critique if you don't...well, critique the idea.
Looks good! I can already see some dyed examples of this. I also like the red bowstring touch-up. I'll add this to the OP when I get more time later today or tomorrow. Definitely +1 for you!

Here's a cool banner made by Cosmic-Lightning:
Also a sweet looking banner made by Warriorcat15:
The poll regarding what enchantments to allow to the strongbow are concluded as of today. The results are:
1. "Should Punch II be allowed?" - Majority have answered YES.
2. "Should Power V be allowed?" - Majority have answered YES.
I will have a new poll up shortly.

BA
No offense, but the banner sucks.
You can not grasp the power of my avatar changing attack!
Don't be afraid to report vague, wishlisty, or redundant (Maybe all three) suggestions. Leave a post saying what's wrong.
Yeah, I suck, at mostly everything
\Hmm... Going to need some time to think.
It is not OP, it is not Expensive and it is actually usefull!
Nah, nobodies perfect.
