I suppose. Although villagers are flawed from their heart and require at LEAST one or two entire updates to fix.
Yeah, Mojang needs to do a lot of work on villagers, although I suppose that 1.8 will help with that. But I do support, I still hope Mojang adds guards, since Iron Golems, torches and a good wall aren't always enough.
Maybe adding a new type of villager called "Soldier" or "Guard". They can have a sword and uses a full iron armor with iron sword? I don't know. It would be easier to add though...

Villagers don't have the same shape as Steve so giving them armor would require a lot more coding than giving zombies and skeleton armor required.
And having a stupid villager wearing armor won't make it surfive anyway. It wil ltake longer for them to die but die they will. The player with a diamond armor is okay because he can regenerate but put an hungry player in diamond armor armor in the middle of a pack of zombies and you'll see that he ain't immune to death at all.
What needs to be done is not giving villagers armor, but fixing the villagers and zombie capabilities and AI in the first place.
- Zombies should NEVER be able to "sometimes" attack through doors or diagonally "through the diagonal of block in corners".
- At sunup, villagers should WAIT a bit before going outside. At least until they don't hear any more zombies around.
- At sundown, villagers should rush inside to safety A BIT BEFORE the night actually comes.
- EVERY village building MUST have a door.
- EVERY village building MUST have a torch inside. No mob should spawn inside the buildings! Buildings with access to the roof must also have lighting ion the roof.
- More lighting overall inside the village (woolen lamp posts, torches on the outside of buildings).
- Inside the villages limits, and a bit around it's periphery, ZERO caves and tunnels are able to cross through the dirt or ground.
- Better village defenses around all or at least around part of the village periphery : Fences, moats, walls, etc. This at least forces zombies to make a detour giving the villagers more time to get to safety.
- Permanent Zombies (i.e. zombies holding an item or wearing equipment, or renamed with a name tag) should stop aggroing villagers and move away from the village after 5 minutes have passed. And they don't come back by themselves.
- Tamed wolves and cats as part of villager's defenses, supplementing iron golems . Those aren't tamable by the player. They would be breedable, but the newly bred animals are "owned" by the village, not the player.
- Better villager-to-house mapping so that villagers don't tend to all cram up together inside the same few buildings, close to it's door.
- Better villager AI so they don't constantly go in and out of buildings almost non-stop, and open doors only when it is safe to go to the other side.
- Better villager breeding limits so that each building allows at least 1 villager population (currently, 3 doors = 1 villager, and not all buildings have one door! Which makes lots of "ghost towns" very easily).

I think Mojang should look at the Millionaire (Id remember how to spell it the way they do) mod and base their villagers like that but not so many strange cultures.
There are a lot more practical ways to protecting a villager thsn whacking armor on it. Like, what's the point? Villagers don't even regen, so..
No Support.
Came to say what Ouatcher wrote.. Would require a remodeling of the armor and could probably result in issues if anything other than a new sort of villager armor were introduced. Again, as previously stated, I don't think this would necessarily do much to keep villagers safe anyways. They would probably take more hits, but the only way they're taking hits in the first place is being cornered by a zombie... Which they won't be escaping. So this would really only prolong their deaths.
Maybe adding a new type of villager called "Soldier" or "Guard". They can have a sword and uses a full iron armor with iron sword? I don't know. It would be easier to add though...

That should be added into the OP most definitely. It would also give a reason for villagers to trade enchanted items (which I've seen suggested before), but only enchanted swords and bows. That does bring the argument that it would make Iron Golems useless though, so there would have to be a strong workaround if it were to be implemented (if the Soldiers were to fight monsters). Possibly something like the guards only fight Zombies while the Golem protects from all other mobs?
As for the OP, I support this fully. As stated above a good wall and some lighting is usually not enough, and giving villagers the ability to have better defenses on their person is a great idea. Since zombies and skeletons already wear armor and pick up items, it seems only fitting that villagers have the same ability for armor. But giving them weapons is a different story.
What's wrong with a wall and lighting (why aren't they good enough)? Maybe you are thinking of the torches (often none) naturally generated in houses?
I have no problems at all with zombies or other mobs spawning in my hand-built village, which is totally enclosed by a wall and lit up to daylight, same for a naturally generated village I found; a few stacks of cobblestone and a stack or two of torches and no worries about them getting killed off. Sure, in a Superflat world Slimes will spawn at any light level but those are harmless towards villagers; the Wither is the only other mob that targets villagers and if there is one on the loose you have bigger problems on your hands than protecting your villagers (sure, creepers can blow them up and skeletons shoot them, but only if they are trying to get a player).
Also, don't forget that actual zombie sieges, where zombies spawn ignoring light levels, are broken, and in any case wouldn't occur in naturally generated (non-Superflat) villages because you need a certain number of villagers and houses, and by that very definition they would cease as soon as enough were killed off anyway.
Incidentally, the number of villagers/houses required to have zombie sieges (10/20) is nearly the same as the number of villagers/houses to spawn iron golems (10/21), so the game has already been balanced in that regard.
Adding on to the guard idea, one guard could spawn for every 2-3 normal villagers. They would wear green robes (Like the generic villagers), and when they first spawn have stone or iron swords and leather or chain armor. In dungeons, strongholds and blacksmiths you could find emerald armor and swords, useless to you but they could be given to villager guards, as well as bows. Maybe you could even give them emeralds to rent them out to guard your base.
Villagers don't have the same shape as Steve so giving them armor would require a lot more coding than giving zombies and skeleton armor required.
And having a stupid villager wearing armor won't make it survive anyway. It wil ltake longer for them to die but die they will. The player with a diamond armor is okay because he can regenerate but put an hungry player in diamond armor armor in the middle of a pack of zombies and you'll see that he ain't immune to death at all.

Wow, what he said! Those are the mods I was thinking about. Somebody please forward this wish list to Mojang.
Armor would not be such a good idea... it would be a waste of resources... sorry to say, but villager AI are dumb... they will die anyway. Good concept though.

however, if changes could be made that created somthing such as "Villager armour" which can be found in blacksmiths, and such temples would be useful.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
