So, what if someone kills your pigeon while it's carrying its items? There should be a way to somehow protect your pigeon. Maybe give it a piece of leather/iron ingot/gold ingot/diamond to make it have armor?
In PvP, people could shoot down pigeons to steal their stuff, and maybe if you're sending supplies to your allies somewhere, they could get intercepted by the enemy. Or sometimes, that could happen even in non-PvP, on normal servers, people might just shoot any pigeons they see because there's no grief protection.
I agree, armour would be a good idea. Perhaps found in dungeons similarly to horse armour, or otherwise just you'd right click on the pigeon with an ingot.

This is an excellent idea, I've always wanted more aerial mobs in MC, and birds sure seem to fit the cut! I think a slight modification might need to made though. How about if you try to send them over 10 chunks they just dont go? I personally wouldn't ever send them anywhere, I'd just farm a million of them, haha ;D . But in all seriousness, support all the way! I hopw to see this make it to the big... screen. I don't know what would have made sense there.

10 chunks is literally 160 blocks, which is VERY short. If I had to deliver something that far, I would WALK (not sprint) that distance. I don't think there needs to be a limit.

That looks a lot better Body looks better than mine. Though the head kinda reminds me of a chicken, especially with the flat beak.
I'd opt to make the head a pixel narrower (you can center it by moving it horizontally by .5) and try to find a nice spot on the sides of the head to put the eyes. Don't worry about not being able to see the eyes when viewed frontally because 1) Pigeons already have that dumb look when viewed frontally, 2) They turn their heads to the sides to look at something, so in a typical animation where a mob stops to look at you, they'd just turn your head and the illusion would remain, and 3) It may be possible to angle the eyes a bit.
Hmm...I wonder if the eyes could be -cubes- that protrude from the head very slightly...

Check out Boats Evolved; the fancy huge customizable boats Notch tweeted about brought to life!

Yeah, I know techne.
In the original model the eyes were not visible on the front anyway.
I tried the eyes coming out of the head but, but I didn't really like it. I decided to go with this in the end:
I might put it up for vote on which model to use. (1, 2, or 3)
I also saw a picture of a pigeons tail, so I increased the size from 3 to 5 pixels wide.

Hehehehehehhe, oooohh yeah. THAT'S the rat-with-wings we all know and love (or hate)! You could also make the eyes independent and move them to where you think would be good, but I think they look great right there.
Very nice

As someone who only plays Singleplayer Survival, I like this. A lot.
Being able to send back items when I'm on a long journey would be super super great. I also like the idea of the perch sending out a redstone signal if it's occupied.

Enjoy written Let's Plays? My blog for them is right here:
Could make it so the pigeons fly 3 chunks before teleporting. Just makes it look like the pigeon is out of your view, just like when a bird flies past you in real life, you can't see it forever. The pigeon will end up 3 chunks away from said receivers perch where it will fly to and land.
Im sure someone will find an issue with what I have just suggested.
What they currently do is:
If the distance they fly is shorter than 200 blocks: Fly the whole distance.
If the distance the fly is 200 blocks ore more, they will fly out of your view, and teleport near the other players perch, they will then fly towards it, and land.
So the main problem is, I think they already do.

Sounds good, is there a maximum range that pigeons can travel, in total? Like how many chunks?
Or it's unlimited and they can travel from -5,000 to 5,000(x)?

Mojang staff members get 5,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 tweets from people per day. If sending them a @mention got their attention easily, Boats Evolved would be implemented by now.
And that's IF they're willing to listen to yet another player asking to have their idea put into Minecraft.
Your best bet is a mod.

True, but did you ever think it might be that Mojang did not like boats evolved? I like it, and support it, but neither of us can speak for mojang. The tweets they do answer are often pretty random.
I know that, but we can try to get Mojang's attention all the same.

This is my answer, that I have said many times.
If you shoot down a pigeon, you deserve the items.

There should also be a bird whistle you can use to recall your pigeons if they've not returned yet.

Does 3 players running 200 blocks cause much lag on even a home-hosted server? I don't think this could crash worlds.
