Perhaps iron in Nether Fortresses? There's a compromise. No ore to mine, but you can still find iron.

4 ways to get back:
1. Kill yourself
2. Have a ghast/blaze reignite the portal.
3. Get a flint and steel from a fortress.
4. Fire charges. You can farm them from the nether.
