My head almost exploded reading all of this mob's mechanics. This might be the most complex mob suggestion I've ever seen. Most of the current mobs we have now don't have finished AI, yet you got all these quests and stuff going on with these traveling mobs. I'm not dissing the idea. I could go for a traveling mob but I don't think it needs all of that.
What I meant was the Traveller wouldn't be super frequent, showing up all the time, making for frequent interactions with the player.
No offense, but how does that improve the suggestion exactly? You can give this mob a 0.00000001% chance of spawning/interacting with players/whatever but planet-sized efforts still need to be made for implementing this in the first place.
I don't agree that this mob is too RPG-ish like a few people said, and it's not the most complex mob in the world, but it still doesn't fit the game at all and there's a ton of ways this mob could be exploited. Theriasis already covered that part I see.
Mojang should increase the AI intelligence on the whole anyway.
Careful there. "Mojang should this and that!" statements can come off as arrogance here. As if you know the game better than those who created it. The AI in the game is a bit dumb, but who's to say that improving it could bring more problems. A single "better" could replicate into more than one "worse".

See, what I'm saying is that it will not be as if the mob will be a problem in the sense that it will make it feel like an RPG game; you won't always be dealing with them. Not very often. That's all I meant by that. You won't always be going on quests, always be running into other "humans", etc.
I understand your latter point.

It could come across like that, but I'm not (not that I think you're accusing me).
LOL. You skipped my huge post. I can't really get mad or anything because not everyone will spare 2 hours of their day to reply to all that. I hope you read it though.

We understand what you're saying. We don't always have to deal with these travelers and they will not always be in our face. What we are saying is that, regardless that we don't always have to deal with them, is that these guys are still too much for minecraft.
Not dealing with them does not change the fact that they're unfitting. It doesn't change the fact that Mojang needs to do months of ultra programming to get ALL of these mechanics right.
It's also been mentioned many times how your mob could be exploited, and you haven't really commented on or defended that point.
i dont support.
Its just too complicated, minecraft is simple and this makes it look very not-simple, thus ruining the way it feels.
Are you kidding me? Minecraft isn't that simple, but this mob isn't either. If you think about it, it's recycled ai from other mobs. And ruining the way it feels? Take any mod, they are more complicated than normal minecraft, and they make the experience better. How come you aren't mad about the horse update being too complicated? Horses have complex befriending and breeding procedures. NExt time, think before you post.

These guy's aren't very complicated. Trust me, I could program this mob in a few hours, and I am planning on once I figure some things out. Most of their functions are recycled from other mobs, and it wouldn't be very hard to add in code to make it work out. You really need to do some research before making atrocious assumptions.

When you get screwed by admins but you can't do anyhting because they are admins. That feeling of injustice.
First of all, what is up with that attitude ? Are you serious ? Just because I dont agree with you, you have to say "think before you post" ? YOU are the one who should think before he post. If you dont agree with mine point of view fine. But don't be rude.
This mob IS ALOT complicated compared to the rest. Even horses. ( horses by the way, are just like anyother mob, they are just like pigs/cows/etc with some additions) This traveler mob actually is 3 different mobs, who will all 3 behave differently. Since when did we even needed a companion to bring you to your home ?! There are what, 4 stages for every thing. You are able to give him food and everything. Chose which mob it interacts with ( including other players). The player actually has to care for him too, since weapons can brake, and he needs food. The player actually TALKS with the traveler which feels out of place..etc..
I can keep going on and on. But I advice you to reread the OP, and compare that to another mob. See how complicated this one is to them.
My OPINION is that I think they are out of place, and just dont fit in minecraft. I am not mad. I disagree with your opinion. Welcome in the big scary world, where not everyone likes what you like.
I see alot of mods, and alot of people agree with me, Mods are great, BECAUSE they are mods.
Mods work because only people who WANT it download it. Thats the thing here. Because something works as a mod, doesnt mean it works in vanilla. To me, adding this in minecraft vanilla is like adding guns. It just ruins the feel.
This getting implented mean I basicly have to fight another player in singleplayer. Which is something I dont like. Like i said, this is MY opinion.
So yeah, maybe next time, YOU wil think before answering. Maybe YOU should do some research about how this forum thing works.
I wasn't being rude. It was sheer shock value that someone would be so ignorant. This mob isn't complicated, as a coder I would know. As I said I can easily and will make this mob and maybe even post a link to show how this can fit into minecraft. And on the thing about mods: The horse update was taken STRAIGHT form a mod, so don't tell me people always have a choice about them. And on your last line, it is invalid as I am the only one who has done any research, (lol).

When you get screwed by admins but you can't do anyhting because they are admins. That feeling of injustice.
I am going to cover a few of the points of criticism here as an indirect reply to some people that have already posted, as well as any future posters that may find this useful.
1) "The mob is too complex."
Yes, the mob is elaborate. It depends on how you see it in Minecraft. It depends on how you think the simplicity of everything fits into the game. It is subjective. Not that you cannot disagree; of course that's not the case! But I don't really know what to say to this.
1.5) "The coding would be extremely complicated." I do not have any experience with coding. While I do not assume this mob is easy to make (or anything, for that matter), it doesn't seem extreme to me (I may be completely wrong here)- other elements of the game could be used to help make the mob (i.e. Villager model, grunts and trading [Villager], attacking, fleeing [ocelots], bow combat [Skeletons], etc.). The mob is already on its way with existing elements.
Here is a quote, from the thread about criticism, that I agree with (excuse some of the rudeness):
This cannot be coded A point that deserves to be noted... Thanks badprenup for pointing this out... When a good suggestion is declined because it is too hard to code. Says who?
It's too hard to code? For you? For Notch? How do you know it's too hard to code? Do you have a masters degree in computer science? Do you create the JAVA interpreter for Oracle? Are you a professional video game designer whom can create a complete game in 1/2 a day? If you are none of the above, the complaint of "Too hard to code" is irrelevant and is seen as a really sloppy cop-out for when a good reason to decline cannot be made.
"It's Impossible to code" is even worse. This assertion states that no one, in the entire world, among modders and professional coders, could ever add the suggestion. The problem here is the principle of perfection. The moment a SINGLE PERSON codes it, the suggestion is no longer impossible. Congratulations, you just salted your own turf and made yourself look like an idiot. I mean, "too hard to code" is a sloppy and shameful cop-out, but at least there's room for subjective denial. There's no recovery here.
2) "The mob can be exploited." , "The problems with AI will mess things up."
Before the posts that were on the "negative" side, it was possible to farm these guys since they dropped... drops. I have now changed that. The only drops they leave are things you give them after they've joined you.
Regarding the fact that they may become stuck in a hole, might fall into a pit of lava, and so on... There's not much I can say here. That's a general problem with the game. BUT...
-The "wild Traveller" getting stuck isn't much of a problem now since they have no drops. Of course it will still be strange suddenly finding some dude hopping around in a little pit, but this can be applied to virtually all mobs in the game.
-When the Traveller would join you, I have made it so it can now teleport to you like a tamed wolf (or dog, I guess) can. This will prevent the Traveller from getting annoyingly stuck in a hole, falling into a ravine to their death, etc.
The accompaniment "quest" is still a bit of a problem because you can simply hide the Traveller in a little building and kill all the mobs, and it also still has the chance to get itself killed via the landscape (cliff, etc.) I will try to think of a way to fix the "cheating" of the quest. As for him dying in lava or something... is this really that much a problem? When I think about it, how often would this happen? The mob AI isn't completely useless, it will still avoid obvious dangers (this goes for the mob in general).
3) "It will be like an RPG game." , "It defeats the purpose of Minecraft."
I haven't gotten too much of this so far, but sort of have. I tried to make the Traveller something that wouldn't be in your face, and be like a wolf when it has joined you. A companion, but not a center of attention. In no way is it shifting the sandbox style of Minecraft. This mob does not force you to go on "quests", you don't spawn into a world and all of sudden have your game dictated by this mob. I'm not using the, "You don't have to use!" and "It's rare!" lines as a desperate crutch to support myself, but rather as very valid points to contradict the fact that it's not making Minecraft into another game- an RPG. Besides, Minecraft already has some RPG elements, like the rank system. This is not some huge, new, never-heard-of class of an idea.
And it doesn't defeat the purpose of Minecraft. You still build stuff, you still mine, you still do whatever. Refer to the former paragraph.
3.5) "Dialogue? No way!"
I'll admit, I'm not 100% sure about it. But it's not as far as a conversation, simply a very short expression. It does stick out to me a little, so I may find a visual representation in place of the dialogue.
Thank you to everybody that has taken the time to read and comment on my post!
Are you kidding me? Minecraft isn't that simple, but this mob isn't either. If you think about it, it's recycled ai from other mobs.
Except for the dialogue part. And the "protect" quests. And the part where they have their own hunger bar. And the part where they have their own inventory. And the part where they have multiple chances of fleeing/trading/fighting you. But other than that, all recycled 100%!
And ruining the way it feels? Take any mod, they are more complicated than normal minecraft, and they make the experience better. How come you aren't mad about the horse update being too complicated? Horses have complex befriending and breeding procedures. NExt time, think before you post.
No, YOU need to think before you post. You are comparing a mod to a suggestion for vanilla Minecraft. A mod is optional, a vanilla feature is permanent. Horses are not as complex as you are making them out to be. The horse does not have as nearly as many features as this traveler mob.
These guy's aren't very complicated. Trust me, I could program this mob in a few hours, and I am planning on once I figure some things out. Most of their functions are recycled from other mobs, and it wouldn't be very hard to add in code to make it work out. You really need to do some research before making atrocious assumptions.
Dude, just... wow. You are missing the point here. Even if this mob and all of it's features were added without flaw, it still doesn't fit with what the game is about. Quests, escort missions and dialogue in this game are usually stamped with a "nope" from people.
Horses on the other hand are just... Ride them and breed them.
Getting pretty irritated with the extreme negativity all the time from so many people posting on suggestions. People rip each other apart for having different opinions and sometime people are just downright cruel to whoever made a suggestion or someone else in the comments. Can everyone just conduct activity on here in mature fashion without it always turning into a brawl. I have seen way worse on other comments but I feel like saying it now. Anyways.... I have already said support but I will say it again.

I agree. Also, thanks for the support! Do you have any thoughts on how this could be improved?
You could start with clearing up the possible ways players can exploit this mob. That's something that's been mentioned a lot of times in this thread and you seemed to ignore it.
You also don't want to get in the habit of paying attention to JUST the positive posts. Sometimes even the most negative posts can give you the best insight on how to perfect your suggestion.
If you want an idea to truly flourish, you need to learn how to take the good and bad posts. Not just the posts you prefer.

You have to understand that just because you aren't being forced to use something, doesn't fix any problems. For example, if I slapped skill trees in the game but say "well you aren't forced to use them" - it wouldn't matter, they're still RPG-ish and they're there. Me choosing not to use something didn't change those factors.
This is why villagers don't perform an insane amount of tasks, because players could manipulate that into getting villagers to do stuff for them. And guess what? Villagers still don't have those tasks but they can still be trapped and possibly exploited still.
Another note. You can't really use statement such as "well I don't feel that way about my idea" because we already know that, otherwise you wouldn't have posted it. Your own opinion is always the weakest one. That applies to everyone.
If this was just a traveling villager, that'd be one thing, but you gave it escort missions and such. And we really, really don't need any more helper mobs. Especially not ones that have their own hunger bar and such - in that case, you have to take care of yourself AND these travelers. That's a nuisance.
Just because this is a good idea to you and a few others, doesn't mean the idea is good universally.

Ok, I should have expected as much knowing how terrible the minecraft community is, but I digress. Clearly your ignorance is blocking my points and facts from getting by in any way, so seeing as that completely nullifies any point in arguing, I will refrain from doing so, and I hope you till too, (although, again knowing the minecraft community, that's like asking vegetarian to eat a steak).

When you get screwed by admins but you can't do anyhting because they are admins. That feeling of injustice.
I like most of it. The main thing I disagree with is the fact that there is a 20 block limit in which the villager will follow you. I don't think there should be a raidus limit, only a time limit as the chances of a traveler spawning within 20 blocks of your base seems a bit unlikely given the statistics provided in your post.
You have to understand that just because you aren't being forced to use something, doesn't fix any problems. For example, if I slapped skill trees in the game but say "well you aren't forced to use them" - it wouldn't matter, they're still RPG-ish and they're there. Me choosing not to use something didn't change those factors.
I know. This mob, in regards to an RPG, does not create problems. It is a mob with an RPG-ish overtone, like the game itself. The reason I said that they're not very frequent is the fact that the only way for it to start making it an "RPG problem" is if the mob spawned everywhere and you were getting "'quest' requests" all the time and such.
This is why villagers don't perform an insane amount of tasks, because players could manipulate that into getting villagers to do stuff for them. And guess what? Villagers still don't have those tasks but they can still be trapped and possibly exploited still.
This is the most valid argument to me. Could you state some ways it could be exploited please? I'll see if I can tweak the mob to fix it.
Another note. You can't really use statement such as "well I don't feel that way about my idea" because we already know that, otherwise you wouldn't have posted it. Your own opinion is always the weakest one. That applies to everyone.
While this is true, what is your point of saying this to me? I haven't been saying things like, "Well I like, so that's what counts." Some things are based on your personal judgement. Like if you like the simplicity of Minecraft, and you hate the fact that the mob has more than one line of action. "Well, it would stick out." Not really. It fights the same, trades the same, etc. It depends on if you like the mobs having an extremely basic act pattern.
If this was just a traveling villager, that'd be one thing, but you gave it escort missions and such. And we really, really don't need any more helper mobs. Especially not ones that have their own hunger bar and such - in that case, you have to take care of yourself AND these travelers. That's a nuisance.
It doesn't actually have a hunger bar. It eats food so hearts regenerate. I might take this out and have the health naturally regenerate, or the player would heal it using potions. Also, how do we not need any more helpers? Yes, it is not necessary, but it's also not redundant. We have three helpers: Snow Golems, Iron Golems, and tamed wolves. This mob is unique.
Just because this is a good idea to you and a few others, doesn't mean the idea is good universally.
Aside from possible exploitation, the same thing could be said to you; just replace "good" with "bad".
Ok, I should have expected as much knowing how terrible the minecraft community is, but I digress.
Yeah, there it is. "Oh wait, is someone daring to argue with me? Yeah, community is terrible." No, it's not the community, it's you.
Clearly your ignorance is blocking my points and facts from getting by in any way, so seeing as that completely nullifies any point in arguing, I will refrain from doing so, and I hope you till too, (although, again knowing the minecraft community, that's like asking vegetarian to eat a steak).
I'm arguing with someone who has Herobrine in his avatar and sig. If you're gonna defend yourself, do it, don't do the "yeah the community is ignorant so um i'm just gonna not say anything anymore." That's cowardice backpedaling. Your post on comparing horses to this idea was stupid.
If you really wanna prove us wrong, go make those mobs you said you could in a few hours.
No offense, but how does that improve the suggestion exactly? You can give this mob a 0.00000001% chance of spawning/interacting with players/whatever but planet-sized efforts still need to be made for implementing this in the first place.

This is the most valid argument to me. Could you state some ways it could be exploited please? I'll see if I can tweak the mob to fix it.
Aside from possible exploitation, the same thing could be said to you; just replace "good" with "bad".
Yeah, there it is. "Oh wait, is someone daring to argue with me? Yeah, community is terrible." No, it's not the community, it's you.
