As you may know, people use smoke signals to alert others from far distances. Beacons serve a similar function, but are very expensive. I've come up with an alternative, cheaper method.
How to use it:
To create a smoke signal, you must create a 2x2 square of fire (preferably on netherrack) and throw a carpet in. A smoke cloud will then rise, similar to the beacon beam. (The smoke cloud will not be made of particles, but rather a transparent, gray smoke beam.) To prevent this from being too overpowered, the smoke signal will only go up 30 blocks before fading.
Uses:
Smoke signals can be used to mark an area so you'll be less likely to get lost. You can also use them for decoration.

Interesting concept.

I don't think you should put the section on uses before the sections that inform us what these are.
How to use it:
To create a smoke signal, you must create a 2x2 square of fire and throw a log in. A smoke cloud will then rise, similar to the beacon beam. A good concept, but OP no matter what. A bacon can go shorter distances even with an ore pyramid.
Though, the mechanism seems a little flawed. What exactly would it look like? I would prefer not to have a random 2x2 patch in the middle of nowhere producing smoke.
It should probably be something that is easier to handle, like a single "flare block".
Smoke Signals in real life are sent up by putting a cloth over a smoking fire, and the patterns can send simple messages to people far away. Your idea isn't historically accurate, but if you used carpets or something it would be more realistic. Also, what happens when the fire stops burning? You would have to go back and re-light it every time.

You could light the fire on netherrack. I should've included that in the post.. Also, yeah, I like the idea of using a carpet.

Thanks for the feedback. And yeah, I probably should put the "Uses" section last. (By the way, a bacon probably does go shorter distances. xD)
Edit: Fixed
