Skeletons are freaking ranged mobs. What's the point of replacing their bow with a tool? Why do people never understand that every single mob in Minecraft has a specific purpose to fulfill and a certain aspect to enhance.
Zombies are not stupid and unoriginal. Zombies fill the spot of a simple melee mob. Why do people say "the only original thing a zombie has left"? Skeletons aren't ridiculous nerfed Zombies that somehow acquired a perk. They fulfill the position of the simple ranged mob. Slimes take the role of a splitting mob. Creepers take the role of a short, destructive suicide bomber type. Endermen take the position of a mysterious and creepy being to be feared, to be revered.
Even in the nether, the Zombie Pigman takes a position of a fearful but normally neutral object to be edged around. Ghasts take the role of the only flying normal mob in the game. Wither Skeletons are specifically for accessing the Wither, but still contain the same properties as the Enderman - feared, afraid of. Magma Cubes are admittedly less original, but basically act as a counterpart for the slime.
In Minecraft, there are no meaningless clones of mobs. There isn't a zombie, an evil goblin and a mad soldier that do the same melee attack. There are no evil wizards that shoot magic orbs, enemy archers or robotic droids shooting lasers to accompany the skeleton. Everything is perfectly original and has its own attribute that fit with the rest of the game to create a masterpiece of clarity, meaningfulness and simplicity. And making a variant of the skeleton that does nothing different to the zombie goes against this principle.

Why Minecraft mobs should NEVER have multiple attacks:
- No other PC mobs do. - Mob behaviour is intended to be simple.
Why you should NOT name new "special ability" weapons as "XXX Swords":
- No other swords have special abilities. - Make a new kind of weapon.
