There shouldn't be a page exclusive to ores... I like the idea of the ores being applied to any block, though.. The "ore textures" (the textures added to stone and Netherack to make it appear to be a ore) should simply be overlays (like with grass, and leather armor). Being overlays, these would be able to be added to any block, even if they only naturally generate in stone materials. I only have one concern though: when you showed the picture of iron in andesite, there wasn't enough of a contrast between the added ore texture, and the original material (it was too hard to tell that there was an ore in the stone).

I suggest that You use my "official" banner. No offense, but the text in yours is slightly hard to read and that red line kinda hurts. Again it's only a suggestion, No offense.
I got an idea for you. It might feel weird when mining an andesite iron ore, that it drops a stone iron ore. Because iron ore blocks in hand are always in stone. So you should add as a side note, that mining gold and iron would now instead drop an item, iron ore and gold. So you couldn't place them back.
I have replied in similar posts about iron, gold ores being dropped as raw non-block items, but it seems that i always tend to forget to edit my main post. Edited, thanks.

I would have used yours, but the Blackboard code that you gave doesn't work... I'll see if I can just copy the image location of the banner you're using...

I like the thinking behind this, but im not sure metadata can be used to store all the info that is on actual blocks. I mean, the only metadata using blocks i can think of is wool. they all have the same id, break value and such, they just have an extended number (the metadata) to define their wool colour. pls do correct me if im wrong though, as humans are known to make mistakes 50% of the time, the other 50% they dont make mistakes.

It should be easy enough to change the break time inside the block's class depending on the metadata, wool & stained hardened clay already does this to change the colour dropped.

No sorry, I misunderstood Your question. Blocks with Iron/ Gold ore metadata will drop only an raw ore item. The mining speed and tool needed to harvest the ore is block dependent. However the tier of the used tool is determined by ore.
Example:
Dirt with coal metadata
- Coal ore can be mined with a wooden pickaxe upwards.
- Preferred tool for the dirt block is a shovel.
Result
When you use a Wooden shovel (or better), the block will break at a normal speed and it would yield only the coal chunk.
Otherwise it would break and nothing would drop.
Obsidian with Iron ore metadata (note that obsidian is generated after the world so, no obsidian-infused ore would exist naturally).
- Iron ore can be mined with a Stone pickaxe upwards.
- Preferred tool for the obsidian block is a diamond pickaxe.
When you use a Stone pickaxe (or better), the block will break at a normal speed and it would yield only the coal chunk.
Otherwise it would break and nothing would drop. (note: when you use a stone pick, the mining speed would be equal to that of a normal obsidian block).
Edited the main post and retouched the suggestion.
already understood too, because it's still the same block inside
whoops! full apologises for unknowingly editing my previous post after your reply
big my bad, got distracted and thought it was still unpublished
I'll try re-phrasing again lol
must implement at same level snow overlays are defined and applied
separate blocks required for different metadata values atm
manually editing the metadata for each stone type is not a difficult task, albeit extremely tedious, I smell lag
stones need to be replaced/upgraded with a default overlay value in metadata
possibly an inherited optional setting from parent template of stone
how is the metadata values for drops and overlays being changed?
when?
how is the metadata being injected into individual blocks within a block type?
is it a block.state?
sorry, if I'm overlooking the obvious
communication is a wonderful barrier

OHHH U FELL FOR IT! OOOOOHHH
Full support! This already needs to be part of the game. I would love to see this implemented. Much better for my OCD to!:P
I'm not one for breaking rules. I just like to bend them out of my way.

Interesting idea you got here.

This is not the signature you are looking for.
Banners and such things
sounding better and better as I read through the topic, simply visionary and so close I can almost taste it!
since getting rid of ore blocks altogether...
proposal: motherloads
to simulate rich veins, not just big ones
if surrounded by same ore/gem (6 adjacents), then %-spawn-rate it's a solid block of metal/gem
ie 15% of 15% = 2.25% overall chance
not sure if this can be done with metadata
recipe editor mods can disable crafting them (recycling), so spawn Hope Diamonds, Stars of Sapphire, etc
@betherella
have you considered using a drop/spawn/worldgen editor to get diamonds higher?
Ores would spawn according to regular spawn rates. The only difference would be that the are metadata attached to an existing block.
already understood
except, it also replaces ore/gem blocks with a drop change to stone blocks
what actually triggers this drop change? the metadata? the overlay?
what else can it trigger, a block state?
hence my proposal for spawning blocks that don't have a spawn rate, toying with potential
apologies if annoyed

I like it.
Good Idea!!
Support!!
afterthought:
in order to get the same %ore result...
%ore must change, because it would point to % stone with overlay type 'n' instead
%stone needs to increase by %ore, to replace all those ore blocks
however, only need change % ore instead, if they drop stone as well
edit: added "as well" to clarify
