I've noticed that most villages you will encounter don't have an Iron Golem. And besides, all they do is attack you if you try to attack the villagers (why would you need to anyway?).
So I came up with the idea for a new mob! Well maybe...
While it technically ISN'T a new mob, the Soldier would look like a villager wearing armor and wielding a sword. They could have 2-3 pieces on at once, and each piece could be a leather, chain, or iron part, while the sword would be wooden, stone, or iron.
Simple, right?
Not really. Every (and I mean EVERY) village would spawn with 4-8, depending on the size, and would attack you if you start breaking a house, stealing from a blacksmith chest, or harming the villagers, making it much harder for people to get good resources earlier on.
Now while this may anger many players, there are some good sides to them, and a loophole to their reasons for attacking.
GOOD SIDES:
-In order to protect the villagers, they attack hostile mobs on sight, making it easier to camp out in a village if you are underprotected.
-You could hire them by right-clicking to follow you like a dog would, they would attack all hostile mobs that come within a 5 block radius of you or the soldier itself. All soldiers would have a different hire cost, just like the villagers have different trading costs.
-While hired, you can right-click on them to have them hold up to 5 items for you, kind of like a chest.
-If they start to annoy you for any reason at all, you can dismiss them from the same interface that makes allows you to give them items. Any items that they are holding are given back to you. If your inventory is full, they drop the extra items right on the ground.
THE LOOPHOLE:
For them, attacking hostile mobs and protecting the villagers would take extreme priority over their reasons to attack you. This could allow you to take any materials you wish while they fight. And they would take no action against you once they're finished. Why? Because they were distracted.
Sorry but no, these extra villager helper mobs or fighting villagers usually get stomped down the toilet.
Wouldn't it be simpler and overall more convenient to just tweak the Iron Golem and/or make him spawn more frequently? Instead of shelling out all this trial and error programming for another village defending mob? Imagine a village having both these "soldiers" and golems. Yeah, might be a bit much there. That's also quite inevitable anyway since all villages would spawn with 3-4 of these buffed soldiers.
And there's really no need for that "hiring" stuff. We can already have packs of wolves to follow us and protect us. The same goes for Iron Golems if you use a lead on them.
Did you just say that because he's new to the forums? This is one of the first times I've seen a tree puncher make a good suggestion.
Doesn't matter if he/she is new or not. This post is still redundant, and there is no reason to have not search before posting.
The idea is good, but I believe it is overpowered. You are just giving villagers another defense mechanism, which makes iron golems obsolete in many situations.
So yet another Iron Golem. Why not fix Iron Golem pathfinding and make them spawn more often? And also prohibit zombie sieges unless the player has traded with a villager.
Hey OP, this thread has been linked in your suggestions a number of times. Do yourself a favor and read it this time.

No he didn't, he had official and good reasons to say why this post was redundant.
Also, it would be much better to just fix iron golems, rather than to add a new mob which can be hired. I don't really think that fits into Minecraft anyways.

Your argument is invalid this time. Nobody can legit call me out for redundancy this time because I actually searched for it a few different times and looked through some of the pages of lists and never found one.

I know from experience it is hard to search for something because I made a Shield thread, but it turns out there were two other threads already there and despite the fact that the other thread simply said "plz ad shilz" (not literal quote) my topic still got locked for redundancy, despite the fact that mine was better explained, but im going off topic, your suggestion makes iron golems useless, instead of suggesting a new mob why not suggest fixing the current iron golem?

Thank you for seeing where i was coming from, and I do understand that it would make iron golems useless.
My change to this idea:
-They will only spawn in a village when an iron golem doesn't.
I'd like to post changes to the iron golem in this comment/reply but I don't want the thread getting locked for redundancy again (even though it has to do with village defense just like this whole post is).
I have been making an adventure map and I want to simulate a "medieval war" however even though I can equip zombies with armor and weapons, there is no "good" mob that will fight against them yeah sure Iron golems will fight them, but that looks jinda lame.
So if this was added I could have my "war" hahahha perhaps this villager soldiers could be like the skeleton horse which cannot normally spawn.

I think this is one of the better suggestions by a Tree Puncher, with significant additions instead of "add fightr vlagerz plz", and since when did adding a mob that has a similar (but not the same) role be unthinkable in minecraft? We have wither skeletons which are essentially either a stronger form of zombie (in mechanics), or a stronger form of skeleton (fire bow), with the slight change of size, texture, and the addition of head drops. This adds more to the game, and has a good reason to have it. This is an alternative to the iron golem (which I have NEVER seen spawn naturally in a village) with significant depth. From a coding standpoint it does not seem very difficult.
I don't like the idea of hiring them however. Wolves and cats already fulfill this purpose as an easier to obtain method, and I can imagine AI issues of the soldier dying by cactus or lava. They would become a nuisance if hiring was implemented.
I know I'm going to get a ton of hate for this, but I support the idea (except for the hiring part).
Yes, yes mobs are a problem to the villagers but there is another thing that is a problem to them and its called fire.
I think of a fireman, he/she would run all over the village with a bucket of water and get rid of all the fire burning its village.
Of course they would have their own house with somekind of a chest that mostly contains a bucket.
the problem with your idea is that it would become a greifing tool, some random A##hole comes in and lits a building on fire, then the derpy fireman village pours water on the fire and floods the village, unless of course the villager removed the water source block once the fire is out.

Instead of having them spawn in large numbers on any size village, they could spawn 1 soldier per 4 villagers, like the iron golem spawns for every 10 villagers. That way, small villages won't instantly be decimated the first night. This would also open up more possibilities for adventure maps. The soldier should also not be able to be hired, and only have a leather chestplate, and stone sword. If you do not like my suggestion, please give a logical reason why.
I love this idea, and its very well balanced, full support Although I do have one idea, rarely, a 'Village Hero' should spawn in very large villages. This villager looks like a farmer, with no armor, but his robes flow out like a cape, and he wields two iron swords. He's the most expensive to hire, and is also the best at fighting. Only bad thing is, he has no armor, and only ONE can spawn per village, and ONLY if its a large village.

however the idea of villager soldiers has been suggested before
http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1968261-village-guards/page__hl__%20villager%20%20guard
, as well as the idea of being able to recruit them.
http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1970686-villager-mercenaries/page__hl__+villager%20+guard#entry24257256
thus making this topic redundant,
