Before you go and report and not support, listen. First off, this is a brand new idea. There may be some things similar to other ideas, but for the most part, it is different. Second, in case you are wondering, Mojang didn't say they wouldn't add any more weapon tiers, they said they might if it is unique. I'll get into why it is later. Well, I hope you like my idea!
Intro:
Spears are nomadic, like mincraftians are. I mean, we fight with swords, arrows, even our fists! Besides clubs, spears are the most thought of primitive weapon. Where we aren't primitive, it would fit with the other weapons that are like it.
Crafting:
Well, you need to learn how to craft it first, don't you? It is pretty easy. Here it is. If you can't see the picture, tell my and I'll say what it looks like.
The diamond can stand for any material you make a sword out of. I just used diamond because it is the most iconic.
Use:
Remember I said it was unique? Well, here's why. It is minecraft's only melee and ranged weapon! Yep, you heard it right! If you left click, it will jab the spear. If you hold right click, it will slowly pull back, like how an arrow looks. It shoots with half the power as an arrow, which means it's range is half as long.
Damage:
When you jab it (left click) it will do a half a heart more then a sword of the same material. When thrown, it will do the same damage as an arrow would, with a 10% chance to do 1 heart more then an arrow!
Looks:
It's handle, which is made of wood, is as long as a sword. The tip looks like an arrow tip, but with the right material. You will hold it in the middle of it. When it pulls back, your arm will look like it does when pulling the arrow back, but only that arm.
Enchantments:
You can enchant it with enchantments that fit bows and swords! Like normal, smite and sharpness can't go together, and neither of those can be in the spear with the power enchantment. The enchantments act the same. Infinity won't do anything with it. The sword flame and arrow flame will merge together as one, and if you get it, it will work with melee and throwing.
Picking Up and Durability:
When you hit it, it goes down the same durability as the sword of that material. When you throw it, it will lose durability (at the rate of the swords of that material) if it hits the target or not. When it hits a player (just an example as a target) it will stick in him like an arrow. But, after 3 minutes, it will fall out, and stick in the ground like an arrow. At this point, it looks like it would if it just missed the target. It will just stick in the ground. Anyway, there are two ways to pick it up. If it missed the target, or fell off, and is on the ground, you just have to go over it (like collecting and arrow) and it will pop into your inventory. But remember, the other player can do this, too. The second way to pick it up is if it is in the player. If you run up to him, you will grab it when you are half a block away or less. He cannot pick it up when it is in him. If he dies when it is sticking in him, it will fall and stick in the ground.
I hope you liked my idea! Please give feedback, and tell me how you liked it. Tell me what improvements you think it should have, or anything else. Please read my other suggestions, and thanks for reading!
I think this is a good idea; however, I believe some things may need to be modified.
First of all, It shouldn't have the range of an bow. That would be one incredibly strong arm. I think it should have half the amount of range as a bow.
Second, I feel as though spears should not be able to get many enchantments. That would be a little OP if a spear had infinity, wouldn't it?
Finally, I think the durability should lose twice as much if they threw it and hit a player. Otherwise, they could use the spear so many times and may be OP.
With these changes and maybe more, I could see supporting this.
So, a combination of a javelin and a sword?
YES!
Original, new and in place. Only problem is the weird-looking recipe. I would prefer:

Why Minecraft mobs should NEVER have multiple attacks:
- No other PC mobs do. - Mob behaviour is intended to be simple.
Why you should NOT name new "special ability" weapons as "XXX Swords":
- No other swords have special abilities. - Make a new kind of weapon.
OP unless it does not have the same power as an arrow. Arrow's are really powerful, doing the same ~~if not more~~ amount of damage is too extreme. Tone it down.

I actually think the damage of throwing it should be buffed. Do you have any idea how many arrows it takes to kill someone with diamond armor? The problem is even worse since you can't stack these. Why throw a spear that you possibly spent diamonds on to only use it once in battle when you can pull out a bow and spam arrows? It does the same mount of damage and much cheaper.
The general damage for jabbing should also be the same as the equivalent sword. Other wise I might as well carry just a bow and sword. And since I will throw the spear I will be carrying a sword as a backup weapon anyways.
I think it should deal twice as much damage as a bow when thrown at the least. That way it will be worth throwing and not just a weaker sword that you right click and lose during the heat of battle.
Other than that, I like the idea and have wanted spears for a long time, support.

I will probably keep the damage the same, but lower the range to half.
This idea is very balanced. The only thing I would add is that the spear has decreased knockback (when jabbing), because otherwise people would not want to use a sword anymore (blocking is hardly used, except with creeper explosions).
The name I would give the fire enchantment would be "Torch".

I may just make it that it has less knock back then a sword. Also, why should I change the name of the enchantment. Everything else is flame.

Well, if you were able to get either fire aspect or flame on your spear, then (because you said they would be combined), there would be a higher chance of you getting it. Having a third enchantment just applied to spears could be a solution to that problem.

Ok, you misunderstood me. But, um, if I start talking weird, sorry. I was just writing a minecraft constitution for a server, and I tried to write it like they did back then. Anyway, I didn't mean that you would more of a chance. I just mean that they would be combined into 1, which means that it only has the chance to get it as much as anything else.
When thrown, it will damage a hit mob/player and will continue flying throw him/her/it to hit another mob/player. The level of enchantment determines max number of players/mobs hit.
I like the idea, but it seems a little OP for a multipurpose weapon. I suggest it does half a heart less than the bow. Other than that, Support!
Another guy had an idea. You could use diamonds to make a spear, then throw it, then it's gone, and you wasted the diamonds. So, if it is gone that easily, then you should be able to do some good damage with it.

Ok, but is it called flame or fire aspect then? Fire aspect would make most sense, I feel.
How about having flame only affect close range and fire aspect for long range, and if it sticks to a mob and has a fire enchant, it should burn that mob as if it were standing in fire. unless they are in water or have fire protection.
