Carpeted Stairs
Basically, we already have carpets and they work quite well. They both decorate blocks and even slabs if in the right conditions. The thing is, if you want to make stairs leading up to some fancy place or something other than that, carpets can provide some more aesthetics. Only thing is, carpets don't work with stairs. That's the idea I want to propose to you.
They would basically look like this, and have the same effects of normal carpets(like lifting you off the ground a bit). If you're wondering how I made this, I actually used entities in minecarts to make the effect of it being there.
Only thing is, it doesn't raise you up the ground a bit and is quite complicated for a normal Minecraft player to even do, not to mention it can't be done in survival. Also, if used too much, the entities(minecarts) would cause a lot of lag.
Their hit-box would be the red glass, so it takes up that space.
The Problem
From the knowledge of Mojang and others, the way the game is currently coded can't be made to add this, or will take some recodes in certain areas. So I have some suggestions made by others, which gives other ways on how to add a carpeted stairs, only it doesn't actually have a higher hit box on top of the stairs. So if it really does take a long time to recode to add something like this, these will do as well.
Morph In
The suggestion here made by Deonyi, said that if you right click a stairs with a carpet, the texture of the carpet would switch to one with a thin line of carpet on top of it. If broken, it would give back the stairs and the carpet.
Classic Crafting
Suggested by Deykhal, it basically means that they will add blocks with carpets on them as a crafting recipe. However, it isn't a new model, and is just the textures change like the Deonyi's one.
That's all really, it's quite simple. Do tell me how you feel about this suggestion, and ways I can improve it if needed.
While I like this idea, I'm not sure they would be able to do it with the way the game is currently coded. I'm hoping the latest changes they made to the game, being quite significant, are a step in the direction to allow this sort of thing.
If they could allow you to place carpet directly on stairs as suggested in the pics, then they could do similar with different slabs stacked on one another in the same block space. Otherwise they might have to add new blocks (crafted from stairs + carpet). Either way...
Maybe if you place carpet on top of stairs, the carpet will 'morph' down? Their hit box would be where they morph down into though, since the stairs would be a tile entity,
YES PLEASE. This is something I have wanted to see since carpets came out. Support.

I find that this suggestion is good, as it might be easier to code, rather than to recode a lot of the game, like what everyone else has said.
I will add this to the OP. Thanks Deonyi.

Finally, someone who thinks carpeted stairs are good! SUPPORT =)

I'll support this, I could definitely use it in my structures. See a lot of kinks but looks like the discussion's already ironing them out so I don't have any input as of now.
suggesting carpeted stairs is awsome. Right now im thinking of the grand stair case at the Grand Floridian Resort in Disney World, Florida. those stairs are just beauitful. i love them.
Seeing carpeted stairs in minecraft is just awsome. I know how carpeted stairs look and i already have a few great ideas i would do if this gets implemented.
Minor criticism of Deykhal crafting:
Wool's color isn't considered when crafting. Red, green, and blue wool can be used simultaneously when making a bed. This means that a "carpeted stair" would come out a defaulted color of "white" when crafted. Of course, this is an ignorable criticism considering that you'd just have to dye the "carpeted stair" to achieve the desired effect with few tears or upset tummies.

As for the crafting way, I'll add that too.

I was hoping that would be understood without actually having to state it. Apologies.
