Ever accidentally crafted 2 iron boots when you only needed 1? Just upgraded to diamond armor and don't need your iron set clogging your inventory? Well, thats why we need, The Melter.
This new item allows us to melt down crafted items for their ingots. Such as:
Golden Armor
Golden Tools
Diamond Armor
Diamond Tools
Iron Armor
Iron Tools
Crafting:
The item would be crafted like this:
[IR][ X][IR]
[IR][ B][IR]
[IR][IR][IR]
IR= Iron Ingots
B= Bucket
X = Blank space
Balancing:
Melting items should cost experience levels.
You would only get about 60% of the ingots that were put into it if full durability.
51-99% you would get 40% ingots.
Anything under 50% durability would be 20% ingots put into it.
I don't think this really needs experience and stuff to make it all balanced, it would just be nice if the gear only provided one or two of its material. I also think that it should only work if the item's durability is above half so that players can only do this with accidentally crafted or lightly used items.
EDIT: Actually, it would be nice to get all your resources back when the item has no durability loss.

Half support.
Yep. I'll support this if it will return you like 60% or the materials needed for the item, 40% if it's half broken, and nothing if it has less than 20% of it's original durability.

If you have diamond armor, I think it's logical to assume that you can spare eight wood to make a chest.
In most cases recycling iron items is unnecessary because iron is extremely easy to obtain.
Gold I can understand... but why would you make gold armor/tools in the first place?
And Diamond, when heated that much, would simply burn up, being made of pure carbon.
And as stated above, using the bucket as a middleman isn't really necessary.
The experience cost: I could take it or leave it.

It shouldn't be made of iron, when it would melt iron. I think, the item melter should return all resoureces, when the tool/armour isn't damaged. However the idea is good. Half support.
Maybe it could be made of netherrack? But that would be less of a hassle to spend in making something than iron, but it's only in the nether portal phase of the game. But maybe netherbrick? You still can smelt netherrack for it but it makes it a bit more expensive.
Hand over the Item Melter's behavior to furnaces. However, I like the idea! No need for gold armor, just melt them back to gold ingots and then craft a clock!
Half-support - maybe you can use the furnace to do it.
Okay, first of all, how the hell would it make diamonds renewable? You still have to mine them, and you're only getting a fraction of the materials back.

I see what you're saying and it makes perfect sense. But I don't see a reason for bucket. Hmm, I don't think it's necessary.

Who cares if it isn't realistic? It's Minecraft.

Crap, accidentally upvoted.
Accident.

Diamonds are already renewable, even if this suggestion isn't implimented.
@joon, last I checked, you could trade directly for diamonds. If I'm wrong, i sincerely apologize for giving you a hard time,
I don't believe i was talking to you, but okay.
