Right now the player doesn't seem to have much control over which way blocks face. While this doesn't matter for normal blocks, things like stoves, chests, and even stair blocks usually end up facing the wrong way when you place them next to each other.
I suggests that these blocks face the direction you place them. Stoves and chests would face towards the player when they place them, and stair blocks should rise away from the player when they place them.
EDIT: Another suggested way would be for blocks to face away from the block they were placed on. (If placed on a wall) For placing things on the floor and ceiling though, they should face towards the player.
Here's some example situations of why this is needed:
Here, I want to place a stone stair block that leads up to the dirt block in my crosshair.
However, when I place it, it faces the wrong way.
Another example. I want to place a furnace here that faces out from the wall, like the one that would be next to it.
Instead, it faces out from the furnace.
Both cases show where having control over which way blocks face would be a great use. I personally think having keys to rotate the block would be too much, but having it face out from the side you're placing it on would be a perfect solution.
I always thought maybe blocks should face the direction of the surface they are placed on, and placing it on the floor would allow Minecraft to autoselect direction as now, placing it on the wall in front of you would make it face toward you, placing it on the wall to the right of you would make it face to the left, etc...
This might make placing stairs even more difficult though.

This is also another way to do the same thing, and this is probably a better way to do it. I don't see why stairs wouldn't work this way, though.

I updated the first post with example pictures.
Those types of blocks face the direction the player placed the from.
