Please. Notch, don't implement land claim flags in Survival Multiplayer. Perhaps in creative someday, but the inability to delete the blocks of another player will totally ruin the immersion and interaction of groups. How are multiple people supposed to work on a single project if the land belongs to one person? How can you breach a castle wall? Open their chests when all they need to do is put a block on top of them?
How far down do they go? All the way? When I'm exploring a cave deep underground, will I find ore I can't mine because someone a mile overhead has a hut?
What if they place one near the entrance to my underground city, and then put a spring block down in their territory that sends a river down through my entire area? Or lava? And I can't remove it because it's on their turf?
Bandits and raiders might as well give up, they can't pillage with anti-griefing measures. Good samaritans can't leave presents or repair damages. Work can't be hired to till your land or mine your mountain.
I think it depends on how people want to play on the server. Some people want nothing to do with PvP and just want to play cooperatively, in which case they would be necessary. I think it should be up to the server admin whether or not to use them.
He hasn't said how they will work yet, but he's set on adding them in some form. I'm not worried, obviously he's got a ton of people who would complain about complete invulnerability, it really adds griefing opportunities, but something will be thought of.
I think landclaim flags should allow your allies to edit your territory. It's only hostiles and potential griefers it keeps out.
Raiding should still exist. TNT and any other major weapons should still destroy your buildings, and enemies should be able to destroy your landclaim flag. The point of landclaim flags would be to balance PvP, not remove it. Without them, offensive actions would be too easy, and there would be little incentive to build or gather.

So please, Notch. No Land Claim Flags.
a land flag is going to be litterally as flag, it will have a short radius in 3 dimensions, and probably wont make things completely indestructible. the current concept for land flags also allows multiple people to be added to the same claim so they can all modify it easily.

That is how you do land claim flags.
This system is about the only way I can see land claim flags being useful, and not pissing everybody off.
That seems to be the most reasonable idea to me, the higher the citys population the less likely it will be raided, while it still makes raiding absoloutly possible.
A invulnerable land claim would be bad. However, a more moderate version would enhance PvP. The key thing is to slow, but not prevent, enemy block alterations. If they want to dig through your wall, it will take time. If they try o build a staircase over, it will take time. Defenses become meaningful, and inter-clan sieges would be possible.
The goal of a land-claim scheme should be to facilitate good combat. Part of this means making it so your fortifications are meaningful, part of it means that attacking should still be possible. Part of it is making sure that the owner isn't hindered, and part of it is supporting teamwork. It wold hinder griefers, but that should be more of a side effect than the ultimate goal. If the goal is to eliminate griefing, the game will lock up in paranoia.
****ing carebears. The games about survival so SURVIVE and don't sit in your pretty base whining if someone attacks you.
Just because it's a game of survival doesn't mean anything goes. It wouldn't be fun if players started with 99 nukes or something, would it? A good game needs balance to be fun. There is nothing fun about not being able to build anything. I already explained in many of my other posts on the topic that LCFs may enhance PvP (encouraging large scale raids against known enemy targets), not inhibit it. It would be like if Blizzard made Protoss way overpowered and then just saying "well war isn't fair, just play Protoss instead of whining about it".

The reason flags would suck is because they could be used as a griefing tool eg. claiming others chests , ores , houses etc.
I also oppose the idea of flags making land stronger. If you want to protect a city, have a militia/police force/watch or something (though that version of flags is more reasonable than flags making stuff invincible).
Flags should have limits. They should be expensive, limited in amount, and not placeable in an area that is already flagged.
Some people think that nothing should happen in SMP. I've seen people who think you shouldn't be able to attack each other and mobs should be turned off. Creative Mode. This is SURVIVAL.
Although, I've seen different versions of landclaimed flags suggestions.
Land-claim flags will NOT make the owner's stuff indestructible.
It will probably just slow down destroying the owner's blocks, so you can actually defend a fort. I don't see why everyone hates land claim flags so much.

I'm pretty sure most people want mobs and pvp, we just don't want convenient griefing.

Interesting idea, strength of field is inversely proportional to the range of claim field multiplied by the upgraded level of the flag.
Flag Lv.1 = 50*50*50 blocks protected, with a 2x slow down on editing, or 25*25*25 blocks protected, with a 4x slow down on editing.
Flag Lv.2 = 50*50*50 blocks protected, with a 3x slow down on editing, or 25*25*25 blocks protected, with a 6x slow
It's not perfect, and the values are all changeable but a system like this could work.
I don't want land claim flags anymore, but I didn't think to make a topic about it.
I don't know, it just seems like it would get rid of the need to form interactions with other players: to work together towards a common goal and the like.
Also if you die, you should be spawned FAR, FAR AWAY.

I know. Many people saying that to me.
So you call having your well-made base destroyed by "raiders" while you are offline fun?
