Well, as the title implies, I think there need to be more rails in Minecraft. Of course we already have 4, - 5, yes I think it's 5, but those aren't too great for making things like rollercoasters. What we need are Rollercoaster Rails. The idea is quite simple:
First off, we would need a "Climb" rail. The Climb rail would work as a powered rail, meaning it doesn't require any velocity, but the speed of it would be changeable. It would be like a powered rail, but the red bits would be yellow or peach-colored and there would be something looking like a chainlink running through the left-middle.
Next, we would definitely need a "Drop" rail, that would go faster than powered rails and require velocity, and in the minecart wind would appear on the side, almost like when you fall from a great distance in the newest snapshot.
Most importantly (to me of course) we would need Vertical, Upside-Down, and AutoAligning rails. The Vertical rails would do just what they sound like they would do: They would be vertical like the Kingda Ka that someone made that used the elevator rails from Railcraft, but instead they would not work like elevators. The minecart would actually look like it's following the track, so it would look more like the minecart is actually climbing up instead of clipping to the rails like elevator rails. And then would have Upside Down, which would make it easy to make Loop de Loops, and then you would have AutoAligning. they would automatically align to the surface it is on, so if it's vertical, it would do so. It basically just works as all in one and finds the surface to match up with. It would also be able to be powered by redstone to change the alignment.
Anyways just wanted to post this. So let me know what you think.

Or we could give the rails we currently have the ability to be placed upside down and vertically, and increase minecart velocity when they go down a rail. It's a simple solution, which doesn't need a giant new set of rails.

That would be good, really. But Climb bricks are somewhat needed because when you add those Powered rails to add velocity, it just makes it go either too slow or really jumpy.

"On a scale of one mile to Lord of the Rings, how far did you walk today?"
