Disclaimer: There have been suggestions of similar things before and I did use the search feature, but I believe mine is unique enough to be its own revolutionary idea.
This idea is simple really. For the price of one diamond, you can purchase a villager. There is no limit to how many villagers you may have in your service at any one time.
With the new AI programmer at Mojang and new zombie AI, villagers will be able to avoid lava when mining and intelligently climb obstacles and find the most efficient path to their destination.
NOTE: If a villager is killed in your service, you will be required to build them a grave. This grave consists of 8 blocks of obsidian and one gold block. Also, you will be required to pay compensation of one golden apple to each member of the village. (These features are balanced as villagers are extremely potent warriors and miners). If you do not honour the life of a villager, the priest of that village will call upon the Minecraft gods to smite you. Flying charged creepers will descend from the sky until you are dead. (Makes for a fun minigame).
These villagers can perform tasks for you, aswell as automatically killing mobs on sight, but tasks set will take priority over mob hunting. Villagers deal fifty damage. Tasks able to be performed include:
Wait here, essentially, they stand still and kill mobs that come to THEM, they will not go to the mobs.
Mine, The villager will dig a quarry of size 30x30, all the way down to bedrock. Anything they find becomes yours, they will mine all blocks except lava and water. (Pathfinding issues discussed above)
Follow, The villager will follow you wherever you go. (Pathfinding issues discussed above)
A little vague. How would 'dishonor' be calculated? Would there be a set time from death to burial? How would burials work?
From what you've posted so far, I don't support your suggestion. The price for a villager and his death out-weighs the advantage of having a villager servant.
Dishonor is attained if you do not build a grave in the short period of time after a villager's death. If you build a grave or die, your dishonor is reset.
Dishonor is also gained if you do not give a golden apple to everyone in the village within three minutes or destroy the dead villager's grave.
hmmmm well i geuss i mercenarie to just stand outside and guard ur house it makes sense but the dishonor and grave system just seems to complicated and more like a rpg 50/50 support
What if you don't have the required materials to pay the village? What if you were out exploring and mining and came across a village, decided to hire a merc and then went back home. The villager eventually dies, but before you can manage it back to the village, the time has already run out. Then you'd be doomed to fall by the wrath of the priest's summons. Rethink the dishonor part and make the compensation and the grave building cheaper, otherwise NO SUPPORT.
Remember our skilled our warriors in robes are, and you shall reconsider. Their service is worth every obsidian shard.
Oh look, it's that guy who made the "lol let's remove all text from the game & replace that with voice acting" thread. Because wolves and iron golems aren't enough, we need to take a mob that's been passive for all this time and just suddenly make them mercenaries.
I do actually, but I just see it in a different way. If this idea was never implemented into the game, then the idea would be genius.
We're not making villagers non-passive. We're turning villagers into something else that is not passive.
Uh huh. I mean, we've only had villagers be passive pushovers since 2011, and it's totally about time we just suddenly make them mercenaries out of nowhere, and the present happens to be the best time to do that.

Hey, you there. Yes, you! Are you thinking about posting a suggestion on the forums anytime soon? If so, please read this before doing so.
You don't see the genius in the idea. We're not making villagers non-passive. We're turning villagers into something else that is not passive.
This is no 'genius idea'. This wouldn't even fit into the theme of vanilla Minecraft. This might make a semi-interesting mod to someone, but mostly seems a little too much with the whole "dig a grave for your dead villager you could probably care less for or you die" thing.
Yes but that's not my point. What if your mercenary dies and you haven't got enough materials to repay the village? Would you then be punished for being poor? Also, how would you know which villagers you'd given a golden apple to, as they move about all day? What if you run out of time to repay while acually trying to find the last darn villager, just because you ran in to another villager thrice?
Yes, you will be punished for not carrying around obsidian and gold.
wow. seems a little harsh. not all of us have chests full of gold.
Yeah, especially now that golden apples require ingots now.
Considering that the village you get the mercenarie has 15 villiagers, you would have to get 129 gold ingots (more than 2 stacks of golden ingots) 8 obsidian, 15 apples, and 1 diamond, for a villiagers that does all the things you can do easily.
Yeah, not worth it.
Oh no not another of Spaceboot's ideas...
Oh wait you aren't Spacebbot...
Yeah, especially now that golden apples require ingots now.

The mercenaries are extremely skilled; I cannot stress this enough.
Even with the insane costs, e.g. A diamond, a gold apple, 8 obsidian and a Block of Gold, having a 30x30 quarry and killing every mob that approaches it is unfortunately overpowered, I mean, I dug a chunk sized quarry, and I got a crapton of materials... I mean, the villager could pay for it's own grave.
What can I do to fix this problem? Are they too OP? I'll nerf it.
Yes, they are quite overpowered, and the grave should be a simple cobblestone crucifix with some sort of block in the middle... Perhaps a Lapis Lazuli Block? Or perhaps something cheaper...
I think a crucifix would be an okay idea, but there are some out there that would treat it like some kind of religious war against atheists or something.
I say no grave. You have payed your dues by paying the villager a diamond, And it was his choice to follow you. How do the villagers even know if he died? And what if you aren't close enough to the village?
No support. Too expensive for such a small thing.

You know, Wallabies are kind of like pygmy T. rex deer.
1. Instead of a diamond, a few amount of emeralds seem more sensible.
2. I agreed with you until "If you don't build them a grave the gods of minecraft will smite you". Thats when I sensed this is going nowhere.
3. If you really want to add "Dishonor", why can't you just make the player's reputation between villagers decrease?
4. This mob has TOO MUCH features. Usually a single mob only has few useful features instead of large, complicated features(Besides boss fights).
5. I don't think the mining feature should be added. Not at all.

I apologize, but I cannot support this.
That's harsh, they're not lame, they're unbalanced.
An alternate timeline emerges.
However, we must first start from the beginning...
