I have a theory why this wasn't done, and it has to do with the darkness of the nether in general. Basically the main way to experience the nether is in darkness, so blocks have to be drawn a little brighter in order to be seen at all. Badprenup's texture is basically what you actually see in the nether, due to light levels.
I don't know if you've spent a lot of time in the nether fortresses, but you may have noticed, if you have your brightness settings turned down, or if you're playing in a brightly lit room, it's very hard to make out any detail at all inside of the nether fortress, due to the darkness of the blocks.

I think you are going to love my Survival Let's Play series on YouTube! It's called Spaceboot1's Garden. I make pretty things.

The nether actually increases light level 0 to make it equivalent to about level 8 in the overworld. Majority of the nether is light level 0. It still looks pink.

I agree with that, and it also largely has to do with the red tint that everything gets. But I just messed with the Hue and Saturation in Photoshop because I only had about a left on my break at work. They could easily just change the pixels that are super light without changing the rest of the pixels. Same general result with less of a negative impact.

I loathe the current texture, mostly because it's eye-hurting and blurs the edges of holes and drops. That said, the texture you screenshotted is indeed way too griddy, you need to work on making it tile more smoothly.

I did some CraftTweaker scripts for Mystical Agriculture. They fill in a couple of small gaps in MA, and also let you make or duplicate not only vanilla plants, but the blocks, plants and wood from Quark and Biomes O'Plenty. Also spawn eggs for most vanilla mobs! The scripts are here on Github.
Netherrack is one of the classic blocks in minecraft. Changing it just wouldn't feel right. You can get a texture pack or choose a different building block.
It's weird; you're complaining because something looks too "nice".
Well everyone isn't complaining like you to make netherrack look better for "everyone" and as you can see, not many people agree with you. Just change it yourself, and if anyone else doesn't like it either, they can change it themselves too.
The first picture looks like a cracked scab with blood all over it...
That's a lovely picture.
I think the Nether could potentially be downgraded if the netherrack texture was essentially all one color. Just seeing red for miles would bore me within seconds. I don't see the netherrack as pink, let alone "cute." There's nothing cute about zombie pigmen and demon ghasts flying around trying to kill you while you sprint around dangerous terrain, dodging fire and projectiles.
I'd rather keep the current texture, because when you compare the two side-by-side, yours may appear better to you, but in my opinion, it would make the Nether very repetitive and with less diversity of color. No support, because netherrack does not need a new texture.

There's nothing cute about the mobs, I'll give you that, but the texture for netherrack needs an update. And of course, that isn't the final texture, I'm still experimenting.

I don't know man... The current Netherrack texture makes the Nether feel special you know? Its hard to explain but the current netherrack texture makes the atmosphere in the Nether super cool for some reason.
That reason is you're used to it, if you get a better texture and get used to that, the nether will be like 500 times better.
The current texture actively blurs edges and holes -- the Nether's landscape is dangerous enough without making it harder to see the precipices.

Curse PremiumNo Support.
well, to be fair, it's not like you have to be great at making textures to have valid opinions on existing textures. But this still needs work.

That's a pretty drastic change, but I think I like it better. Maybe you didn't have to go quite so far.
