Jeb_ said on his twitter that there will be canyons in 1.7, and I always wanted birds in the game so when I saw the canyon I've immediately though of eagles and I would like to know what of think about that
here's an image of the canyons:
now I would like to describe the spawn conditions and the abilities/disadvantages of them
I. spawn conditions
eagles would be rare:
1. they could only spawn in canyon 2. they can only spawn on top of a mountain (a big one) 3. they can't spawn in groups
and don't forget that in 1.7 the biomes will have a logic, you won't be able to find a canyon near a toundra biome so there's a big chance that there would be "real continents" (snow continent, jungle continent, dessert/canyon continent)
II. abilities/disadvantages
1. that's an idea that I just got:
the eagles, when near a mob and when you're riding them, could take the mob in his mouth and when you go high in the sky your eagle would drop the mob and he would take fall damage
2. an eagle could attack but it would do about 3/4 damage everytime
now to the disadvantages:
1. eagles won't only be rare but they will also have low health (5 hearths which is 10 hp)
2. they would be hard to tame (you would need food but I haven't figured which food yet)
4. they would attack everything they see, so they could die if you leave them alone
5. they couldn't swim
I will try to update this post everytime somebody give good ideas
Jeb_ said on his twitter that there will be canyons in 1.7, and I always wanted birds in the game so when I saw the canyon I've immediately though of eagles and I would like to know what of think about that My first thought: Oh, boy. Another bird suggestion.
here's an image of the canyons:
now you may have guessed already: I would LOVE to be able to ride them
now I would like to describe the spawn conditions and the abilities/disadvantages of them
I. spawn conditions
right now some peoples might think that the eagle would make horses/boat/minecart useless, well it wouldn't
because eagles would be rare: It doesn't matter if eagles "would be rare". No matter what, you could fly them back to your base, and for that matter, wherever you wanted. "Being rare" doesn't cancel that out.
1. they could only spawn in canyon 2. they can only spawn on top of a mountain (a big one) 3. they can't spawn in groups
and don't forget that in 1.7 the biomes will have a logic, you won't be able to find a canyon near a toundra biome so there's a big chance that there would be "real continents" (snow continent, jungle continent, dessert/canyon continent) Why is this relevant to the suggestion?
II. abilities/disadvantages
1. as I said: they could fly................
what? what do you want me to say? I can't really say that much.... although... oh I know:
I've also figured out a mechanic for the eagle:
hit space once to jump, then the eagle spreads his wings and he will hover
press space again to fly higher So it's like Creative flying? Which, if it was in Survival, would be extremely OP? Try being less vague.
I think that would be an easy mechanic
2. that's an idea that I just got:
the eagles, when near a mob and when you're riding them, could take the mob in his mouth and when you go high in the sky your eagle would drop the mob Is that an eagle's only method of attack? How much damage would it do?
now to the disadvantages:
1. eagles won't only be rare but they will also have low health How much health? Are they weak to anything, like Endermen are weak to water?
2. you couldn't give them armor (or maybe you would, but they would be rare) Can you give them armor or not? If you could, what types of armor would there be? How strong would they be?
3. they would be hard to tame and they could even attack you (I didn't know where to put that and I think that's the best place) How do you tame these eagles? How much damage would their attacks do?
I will try to update this post everytime somebody give good ideas The suggestion of birds is a very overused suggestion. I'm glad you narrowed it down to just one, but you were very vague. You have to be specific when it comes to suggestions. That being said, no support. (I'm not hating, I'm just trying to help make your suggestion better by giving you tips and ideas of what else to include. I hope this helped.)
@TwinBuilder (I can't quote you because your post is a quote):

they're weak, so you need to be carefull with that, also, skeletons could shoot them and even knock you off
and don't forget that in 1.7 the biomes will have a logic, you won't be able to find a canyon near a toundra biome so there's a big chance that there would be "real continents" (snow continent, jungle continent, dessert/canyon continent) Why is this relevant to the suggestion?
if you're in a snow or forest continent, you'll need to travel a lot for them
I've also figured out a mechanic for the eagle: hit space once to jump, then the eagle spreads his wings and he will hover press space again to fly higher So it's like Creative flying? Which, if it was in Survival, would be extremely OP? Try being less vague.
it would basically be cube world's hang glider mechanic:
you constantly hover down but if you press space once you'll go up a bit
the eagles, when near a mob and when you're riding them, could take the mob in his mouth and when you go high in the sky your eagle would drop the mob Is that an eagle's only method of attack? How much damage would it do?
an eagle could attack but it would do about 3/4 damage everytime
and the mobs will get fall damage when he hit the ground with the "drop attack"
1. eagles won't only be rare but they will also have low health How much health? Are they weak to anything, like Endermen are weak to water?
5 hearts (so it would be 10HP)
the eagles would try to kill any mob they see, so enderman would attack them
and eagles couldn't swim (I'll add that to the OP)
2. you couldn't give them armor (or maybe you would, but they would be rare) Can you give them armor or not? If you could, what types of armor would there be? How strong would they be?
with armor, they would look cool but they'll also be more resistant, which I wouldn't like but that's my opinion
and if there's armor, it would be iron, gold and diamond armor (like horse basically)
3. they would be hard to tame and they could even attack you (I didn't know where to put that and I think that's the best place) How do you tame these eagles? How much damage would their attacks do?
like horse: you go on them and sometime, if you fail, they would attack
and if there's more than one eagle, they'll attack in group
and they would do 3/4 damage
Good for an aesthetic mob maybe, but I think that's it. They really shouldn't be ridable as it doesn't make much sense.
Agreed-While I liek the idea of an aesthetic mob, I would really only agree to ride able mobs like gryphons and dragons, as they make sense. I like the addition of eagles as aesthetic mobs, but rideable? NOPE!

Dragons - maybe,
Gryphons - seems ok.
Eagles - they'll get killed by how heavy you are.
Minecraft is based of of real life and fiction, rideable eagles is slightly too fictional for minecraft. Might as well add thaumcraft to minecraft too, so it can be magical! No support.
Fly like the wing cap from Super Mario 64
Only swoop down over lakes (to catch fish)
Only spawn in daytime
Destroy skeletons, cows, and pigs only
Spawn in groups of 2 or 3 (on average)
If its a fantasy game, then we can also ask minecraft to add knights and castles and princess. Don't forget dragons that you can fly on, moose, cloud-men, crowns, chariots, Pegasus and much more. Just because its fantasy doesn't mean it should be added.

Eagles cant be tamed, you need to steal an egg from an eagle nest and breed it.
breeding ... maybe like chicken-egg, with an higher chance.
Flying:
Nope, you cant fly with it. to imbalanced
Behavior:
Make em more like wolfs
they'll follow you arround, and if you are in trouble they will {fly down and peck the enemy, and fly up again} (looping this behavior until the enemy is dead)
wild eagles will attack the player
eagle inventory:
you can give an item to the eagle (coal, iron, gold, wool, leather, ...) and they will search for that item in the area (means they will circle over ores/sheeps/cows

feed rawfish or raw chicken to them

1-2 feather
0-1 raw chicken
I liked your idea about it, but if you gave an eagle an eye of ender, then that means...

We crawled through dirt and blood and sand to achieve our glorious victory... Not for medals, or glory ...But for what was right.

This is a fantasy game for heavens sake!!You have my support!

To be able to fly on, NO WAY IN HELL
Then I would fully support this.

so, here are some ideas:

Flying:

eagle inventory:
eagle healing:
