I agree that wasting glass is annoying, and I'm in favor of this idea. However, 2-4 shards from a glass block and 4 to remake the block, means that you'll get 50-100% of the material back. I would think that either 1-3 shards from a block OR 8 shards+slime to remake the glass would be a better ratio. As things are now, you get nothing back from broken glass. Changing that to at least half return (possibly full return) seems unbalanced, but maybe that's just me. My thinking is that some of the reclaimed glass shards might be unusable, resulting in fewer drops. I'm not fond of the repairing glass panes idea though. Seeing as the remade glass blocks could be turned into panes anyway.
I like the idea that someone had for giving the glass shards other uses (such as an alternative to flint for arrow in the suggestion).
Also, colored glass shards? Yes.

Wow! Your first suggestion=unusually really good. Yeah, I hate wasting time to go to my beach and destroying it, then i'll have to find a desert. I support!
I support this idea.
Though after finding myself in a shortage of sand/glass, I travelled some five hundreds blocks away from my spawn and ripped off a whole desert. Of course it took me maybe a week in-game and 4 diamond shovels with Unb. III and Eff. IV, got two double chests of sand, which I believe to be enough for the next few RL months. The maximum amount I've used at once was a full single chest of it. And all those little withdraws for some builds and for crafting potions, it may sum up to around 10 stacks of glass.
The point is that while your idea is really nice and brings more uses to slimeballs, we have got Silk Touch to pick up the glass blocks without breaking, and the need of sand forces you to travel to a beach or, in case you don't want to ruin the look of the near beaches, to a far far desert and use good equipment to acquired some good stacks of it.
I only see this as good for who builds massive stuffs out of glass and have to destroy/rebuild parts of it later and haven't got silk touch or don't want to use it.
It's a nice and well thought craft anyway. =D
edit: Even with this implemented, you are still going to need to get sand somewhere, you can reclaim some blocks, but it won't make you much less dependent on sand in order to get more glass, unless you've built something really large out of glass or used a lot of it and plan to remove it.
Hello everyone! I'm quite new to the forums, this is my first post actually.
So what I've been thinking is: "Why is it that upon breaking, glass blocks are lost forever? I hate wasting glass blocks!"
Of course, glass blocks are renewable through trading and just smelting more sand, but not everyone lives a in a desert or a village. (Or a desert village?)
So I came up with a way to make it so that your glass blocks are not totally lost forever. Rather than just being lost for good, glass blocks now drop 2-4 Glass Shards when broken, which can be used in crafting your glass blocks back. 50% chance of dropping 3 shards when broken, 30% chance of dropping 2 shards, and 20% chance of dropping 4 shards.
So how do slimeballs fit in to this?
I've always thought slimeballs should be less of a mid game item, and more useful for the average builder rather than just the equestrian, or the redstone guy, or the potioneer. And now, slimeballs are used for getting your glass blocks back!
Of course, you can't just craft 4 shards back into a glass block, it'd just fall apart again! So you need some sort of glue. Yes, that's how slimeballs fit into this. Heres the crafting recipe:
If for some reason you can not see the photo, here's the recipe again:
The panes represent the shards, the wool represents the slimeball.
That's pretty much it. If you have any ideas on how to improve this, please post them!
Edit: Bringing this post back alive! I think colored glass should also be repaired.
The recipe is exactly the same but with colored glass shards.
Thanks for all the support guys!
Also thanks to Xakel for possibly making this into a mod!
OP did a much better job here, plus there's active discussion on this topic. There's no need to redirect discussion to poorly done dead threads in this case.

Frankly, I really do not see the difference in quality. The thread I linked was essentially this thread but shorter. Brevity is good. It gets the point across without any useless introductions and rambling.

Can you give an example on how to shorten the introduction please?
Thanks
is only game y u hef be mad
Maybe the shards should be in a shape of crafting the glass pane, but with the slimeball at the middle?
Cool idea! I hate having to waste my glass when I build a house. Support!

This is a well thought out idea for a first post.
And it provides more use for the slime ball, adding more depth into the game without making current content redundant. Good job.
