ETA: It's unfortunate that I need to make this edit to my original post; however, many forum members have referenced Skydoodle or some such, apparently a controversal YouTube sensation, in connection with my suggestion. I don't really know much about it, so I'll just preface my suggestion by saying I do not know anything about it, and it has nothing to do with the following idea.
Squid repellant, while rarely useful in real life, would be quite useful in certain Minecraft environments . . . not so much underground, nor on top of mountains, and perhaps not in plains or desert biomes; however, in ocean biomes located in the vicinity of mob grinders, squid repellant would find its primary purpose.
It has been well documented in the natural world that squid are no friend to pigs; and pigs themselves feel uncomfortable whenever they find themselves in close proximity to squid. Therefor, I can't help but feel--and perhaps quite a few of you will feel the same--that a solution to the accelerating trend toward the obsolescence of pigs in Minecraft might also be a solution to the proliferate squid population--again, not so much in taiga or extreme hills biomes, but rather in the ocean biomes.
1. I propose that pigs, in addition to the universally revered pork chop, drop up to four pig's feet (or perhaps a single pig's tail, depending on the MC popular consensus) when slaughtered (preferably in a humane manner).
2. In a crafting table, a pig's foot could be placed in the center, an iron ingot both to the left and right, and a string both on top and on the bottom. This would yield one squid repellant.
3. A piece of repellant could be applied to any solid block, and would prevent any squid from spawning within a sixteen block area around its placement. Any pre-existing squid within the radius would immediately swim for happier waters, and those squid that were already swimming in the aforementioned happier waters would stay there (this addition suggested by user BrickNinja25).
4. As suggested by user Rex1900Roblox, MC would also code in an enmity of sorts between pigs and squid. As mentioned, squid and pigs are unlikely to encounter each other in the world at large; however, when they do, they would flee from each other, the way creepers run away from ocelots.
Thank you very much for your consideration.
I'm not sure how this suggestion was derailed, and I'm not even sure I know toward where it was derailed. Budder? Gold? Sky? But I think my suggestion still has merit:
1. Squid are mobs like any other, and in Minecraft we interact with mobs by either killing, farming, avoiding or ignoring.
2. There are methods to control the spawning (either to prevent or promote) of nearly every mob in the game. From lighting (or its lack) to slabbing to breeding, one may prevent or promote the spawning of every mob (with the exception of squid and bats, I think) by controlling rather than altering the environment.
3. Squid . . . they are quite friendly, dare I say cuddly (don't judge: he who is without sin cast the first stone), and my interactions with future squid would be more pleasant if I wasn't forced to kill them all the time. Imagine walking into an alcohol-free bar, nonchalantly ordering a non-alcoholic refreshing beverage for a squid with a scintillating personality, and using this pickup line: "Hi, I'm StinkySauce. I just saved the lives of approximately 284 squid today. Feel like celebrating?"
The benefits are few, but non-intoxicatingly exciting.
Lol I actually thought this suggestion was true, so I looked it up. Turns out, another Skydoesminecraft reference.
Sure, I'll support this, only if you don't have to kill the pig.
I would want the idea to be like this:
When there is a pig somewhere, in a radius of some blocks, no squids could spawn. (Preferrably, the scare radius of a cat to a creeper)
When there is a pig nearby, the squid will try to get away from a radius the same as creepers with cats
(But... no squids will spawn. How will this work? Well, there would be the spawning aquarium for them to spawn in. Then, in a press of a button, a pig is put inside. With another press of the button, the pig is dispensed back into its container.)
Benefits:
A use for pigs
A way to have automatic ink farms where squids are lead to your collection pit
P.S. Why does everyone seem to hate Sky for something that was mostly the fault of his fans? And plus, a Skydoesminecraft reference for a use for pigs would not be so bad, right? Also, a way to direct squids to your ink farms!

Well, I can see I'll have to check out SkyDoesMinecraft when I finish work. But I very much like your amendments to the suggestion, though I still believe some sort of craftable repellant should be the primary outcome. And there is a lot to be gained by coding in an enmity between pigs and squid. Since such mob dynamics currently exist in Minecraft (like creepers running from ocelots), the development of another between squid and pigs shouldn't be all that awkward. True, squid and pigs don't encounter each other frequently in Minecraft, but as you say, there are interesting things that could happen if they were to meet.
Adventure-style maps, survival worlds, and creative builds would all benefit from a more detailed ocean experience.
Oh boy, I'm gonna get to be that guy who is usually shot for his stupidity. Fun.
Anyways, I can see one place this would be useful. Anyone wanna guess? Here's a hint: mapmaking. Wait, no, that's not a hint, that's the answer. But anyways, one of the more annoying things in mapmaking is when you have water and squids spawn. This could be used to prevent the spawns, making things seem a bit less... silly.
Another use would be for a dock. They could be decorative (depends on physical appearance), but also used to keep squids away so you don't attempt to leave and instantly crash.
A final use would be, as said in the OP, mob spawners. Some mob spawners use water elevators to lift mobs up, and then usually either drop them or do something with them. However, squids can spawn in there, sometimes messing with sorting systems (if you have one) or messing up the whole thing in general.
So, I support this. Even if it was possibly inspired by a Sky fan, it still has potential.
Isn't this a great reason to voice your support for squid repellant? I am also quite fond of squid. Some of my best friends are squid. I don't know about you, but I prefer not to kill my best friends whenever possible. Squid repellant would increase the amount of those precious moments during which I wouldn't be killing squid.
Dude seriously... Remove the pig cruelty part. Just have pigs stand by to prevent squid spawning.
I just don't see how it would be kid-friendly to see pig gore in Minecraft. And pig's feet would require a new item and a block while as for pigs, they do not need any of those.
First of all, if squids that spawn in the radius of the repellified (lol) block just swim away from it, why not just mae it so they don't spawn there at all? Second of all this is more of a funny joke (honestly, this made me laugh(in a good way))then a suggestion. No support.

We're not talking about gore, we're talking about something more akin to pork chops: pig's feet. We could do pig's tails if you prefer, but you should know that both pig's feet and pig's tails are considered delicacies in some places. I, for one, have never tried pig's feet myself (because I'm part squid, no doubt), but I had fried pig's tails before, and let me tell you, it was like god decided chicken wings weren't perfect already, and decided to make a combination of fried chicken and bacon. It was, needless to say, delicious.
Anyway, like I said before, I do like your suggestion; however, it seems slightly more practical to be able to hang up a repellant net somewhere. So I suggested that MC codes in an enmity between squid and pigs (like the one that currently exists between creepers and ocelots), while also adding the additional drop to pigs: pork chops and pig's feet (or tails, if you prefer). I will add a slight amendment to the OP.

I'm not against the idea that repellant would completely prevent the spawning of squid within its radius. If everyone thinks this is preferable, then I'm all for it. Let's say squid are prevented from spawning within its radius, and pre-existing squid will avoid the radius. I'll edit it into the OP.

No, it would not be useful in any of these biomes, except the ocean one. This would have no use whatsoever unless exploring through the ocean, which frankly, isn't that exciting.
Secondly, Squid aren't even that much of a pain, unless you're traveling through the biome, and it is statistically proven that the Ocean biome is the least preferred biome to live in. Also, Squid only spawn in numbers of up to 1-9 in one chunk.
Even though there is planned to be an Ocean Biome update, I still don't find this necessary.

Not sure what that is, but I am a fan of squid-free monster grinding waters! Who's with me?
No support.

Oh my god, the people who are not supporting this suggestions make my blood boil not for opposing, but for the trivial reasons they presented.
Just thought I'd quote it.

Any chance it repels other aquatic critters if they get added?

Unfortunately, no support from me.
