When Ender Chests were first introduced in the snapshot 12w21a, they were an entirely public means of cloud storage, accessible by anyone on the server.
After much criticism, they were changed to be specific to the player three weeks later, removing the risk of other people using them that Jeb had originally wanted.
As of 1.6.2, Ender Chests are very limited in their uses.
They can't be accessed by other players, they can't be interacted with hoppers, and instead of the public cloud storage that they were intended for, their only real use now is as an extra inventory for safekeeping.
So I came up with an idea: the ability to rename Ender Chests.
In this idea, Ender Chests would no longer be bound to individual players, but instead what they're renamed to using an Anvil.
Here's an example:
Let's say I rename an Ender Chest to, say, "EnderChest #1".
I can put anything I want in my "EnderChest #1", such as my diamonds and precious valuables.
Anyone else who has an Ender Chest with the same name as "EnderChest #1" can access its inventory and everything inside it.
"But Water, then people can take all my stuff! This idea is terrible!"
Technically, yes, they can take your stuff.
However, they'll need to know the name of the Ender Chest first.
This basically turns the Ender Chest into a password-protected safe that only people who know the code can access.
For example, you can turn your Ender Chest into a private safe by renaming it to a name only you would know:
Or in raid servers, you can set up an Ender Chest for your faction that only your friends can access:
Edit: Unnamed Ender Chests will still remain private like as in vanilla; only renamed Ender Chests will be affected by this feature.
I love this idea. If the items are consistent, this would mean you could use hoppers on one, to place items into the chest, and another to pull items out of another, meaning an awesome way to transport items!

which means factories, mailing systems and shiping companies can exist once again
It sound like a good idea, but I'm a bit confused.
How would you allow people to access it?
Would you have to input a password chosen by the user? And if they didn't have the password would it just not open or would it open an empty enderchest?
Or make another enderchest with the same name?
Sorry for the amount of questions but I don't think I fully understood your idea.
People need to name their Ender Chest with Name Tag and Anvil. If the name is same as your friend's Ender Chest's name, then you can access your friend's Ender Chest. If you don't have the password, Ender Chest would be empty (unless you have something in your personal Ender Chest -storage.)
The name of the Ender Chest is the password. You just have to make sure that no-one will use your named Ender Chest xD
But then... Can't they just access your ender chest?
I have an idea:
In the ender chest gui, there would be a textbox above in which you type your 'password' and once you do so, then you and others who know the pass can access it.

This is kind of a big problem. If they find this chest (or any that share that name) they can open it and use it. I dislike the idea of an additional password though, at that point you might as well just add passwords to the current Ender Chest and scrap this idea entirely.

The idea is well thought out and I like it's principle, although, if you wanted to SHARE your EnderChest with a teammate, for example playing SMP, yet your EnderChest has an extremely intricate password that is easily forgettable, you're in a pickle.
An idea that could improve the idea, is having an 'enable' name on the EnderChest GUI.
For example, there would be a "text box", if you will, that allows you to add people to access your EnderChest, making it equally theirs as well, simply by just typing in their Minecraft username.
Once they are enabled, the EnderChest is shared, and they are equal owners as well, enabling them to add people to the chest, too.
Additionally, there would be an option to remove them from using your EnderChest as well, in case things get sour between the two people. This alternative completely prevents any sort of unwanted use from potential "password hackers" or "password guessers" on servers, and still allows the same protection it does now.
Necrobumping this.
I had this idea today because I play on a multiplayer vanilla server in which we have unofficial factions. I'd love to be able to throw things at my faction member through this.
Of course it'd be easier without nametags, just rename in Anvil
The idea's pretty simple, really.

Ah, that makes more sense, thanks Sanmuri.

Want to play Minecraft SSP like Spaceboot1? Try my modpack, all mods made by me, Spaceboot1!

But still would be amazing
No, it'll break into obsidian. However, you can just open it to see the name of it.
