No, its not penalizing anyone who bought late if it doesn't give a tactical advantage. It should be aesthetic only. We gambled that a game was going to come out great by paying for it without even seeing what we were paying for, and you say that it would be wrong for us to get an extra doodad to stick on our wall? Think about that. Of course, the choice is eventually up to notch and he'll do something completely off from what we're suggesting.
I'm going to assume this relates to my post.
Little things, even just an extra icon causes nothing but trolling and butthurt. People are going through the worlds thinking they're more awesome than everyone else because they bought the game when it was still unfinished.
The fact that you get the game cheaper than what it would be when it's done is the perfect reward: it's personal.
With TF2 people didn't really care.
However, in all fairness, it's not really the later players' faults that they didn't find Minecraft earlier.
But it's an icon, so if they really get super butthurt about it, do you really want to be playing with them?
I have the soklution. alpha buyers will be given the ability to change not only their skin, but their model too [up until a certain filesize for model and animations].
this way alpha players could pretend they are creepers or pigs in the future!

As someone who has been around since there were only ten blocks and no survival, I would like some kind of bonus item thingy, as long as there are no actual benefits. Because that would **** a lot of people off. You have been working on your base for an hour, and some noob with a creeper skin logs on and one-hit-killls you because 'he bought the game a while ago'.

So...he's the Dwarf Fortress equivalent of Darth Vader?
i guess there should be something... maybe for different things
like
pre-bought alpha - sheep head
played beta before alpha was released - pig head
played beta when notch hadnt finished it - creeper head
notch - notch head
This is probably the best idea so far. Big enough to be fun/recognizable, yet it doesn't give us ANY advantage in playing.
And to make things fun, the Creeper would make random hissing sounds and if you (or anyone) right clicks it, it plays the explosion sound.
And to make sure it has no benefits, make any attacks pass through the pet so people who own it can't use it as a walking shield if they're walking away.
No. I'm not going to say that it wouldn't be nice to have something to show that you supported the game, but from my own experiences, whenever i see someone with that little mark by there name, i suddenly feel less importiant. Yes, it's silly, but its aggrevating to know that just because you diden't buy the game early, you cant have that little useless mark. The only thing i support is a mark for donors, because they actually have given something extra of theirs to support the game.
The game only costs ten euros for the bonus people. Shouldn't be too much of a reward. None even. The reward for buying it was playing it WAY earlier than anybody else. Seriously, who hasn't gotten their ten euros worth in the first few hours of gameplay? We ALREADY got FIFTY percent off. That's a HUGE discount, and it's an indie game (Notch isn't made of money compared to big companies). Games that cost like 90 to 100 bucks have like a preorder bonus of 10 bucks off... that's like 1/9 or 1/10th off. Some have tiny bonuses that you can somewhat obtain later on (ie you get them earlier, that's all, not exclusive). Bonus editions of games cost heaps more sometimes, so it's not any preorder bonus there.
If there is, it can't be anything big that'll change the game. Different skins does sound like a good idea (with options to turn it off if we still want original). I wouldn't mind bonus downloadable content that could be periodic, and other people can pay a one off fee for it... so it's basically like a free VIP pass or something for us alpha people.
Although with the number of purchases already, I think Notch will lose a lot of potential income from people not paying this fee. SO that's not a great idea actually... plus, I think people are buying it heavily now as they think it's coming out soon so they want to take the 50% off bonus. I won't be surprised if a lot less people buy it after release.

Though.. I do like the Ingame Reward, maybe a creeper icon like I suggested but then have an ingame Reward too, like a certificate or painting...

Who said anything about feeding? The monster version doesn't need food, neither does the golden pet version.
.:pizarro:.
This is the best idea EVAR...
Freakin' love this plan!
+1
Skinnable ofc.
