We all know the danger of mining straight down, and straight up, and making narrow tunnels. Lava, drops, drowning, suffocating, mob attack. Its pretty easy to avoid all danger of death underground as long as you use your head and pay attention. Well how about a new type of threat?
Canaries come to mind. Miners would lower a Canary into a mineshaft to test for poisonous gasess. A Canary is substanially less tolerant of toxic gas thne we are due to its small mass and delicate constitution. If it died we knew it was unsafe.
Gas pockets, two types to be specific. Version one is a almost clear bubble type gas like water without the blue, barely noticeible as different from an air block. If a player remains in the gas filled area for too long he begins taking damage.
1-poison timer starts
2-in a little bit of time damage
3-if you leave soon enough after 2, you will be fine
4-if not, you will have a lingering weakened effect active on you.
Gas number two.
A very volitile gas, more visible with an audible hiss well mining, different then a Creeper hiss. This gas will explode if it comes into contact with fire. Torches, Jack'o lanterns, flame, lava, not redstone or redstone torches though. The explosion will be block sized base, depending upon the amount of gas blocks it may only hurt dirt and gravel or it may reach the point to break stone.
Gas would have source blocks like water or magma/lava, and would disperse in air blocks over a certain area.
Gas pockets would exist in small chambers 1 hollow source block in a random section of earth to much larger gas chambers.
Gas source blocks could be collected in potion bottles to be used as a weapon, poison gas or explosive gas. A gas Molotove cocktail in a way.
Note-Expanding on this, add tamed birds or chickens to be used as gas detectors well mining, or utilize cats for this purpose.
I do like the idea and all but what if the sound isn't on. It would extremely annoying and unforseeble for some thus ruining survival for quite a few people.
Since the update for mobs, I don't think we really need more hazards at this point. It's a good idea, but I think it'd just be more of a nuisance than a real hazard.

Er you should have your sound on when in a mine or cave lol. If you do not that is your own fault. Sounds help you pay attention. No sound means you could not hear zombie moans, creeper fuses, lava bubbling, water flowing, ect ect. So sound off = bad reason not to add it lol.
Also lava can be a nuisance as can water and sand and gravel but once you get used to them its fine. Gas would add more variety to the hum drum.
I love the mob update it makes them dangerous. I actually pay attention in caves now to mobs, and have had to fight off undead hoards. Well the mobs improved AI and vision radius is good, they are still a well known and "old" danger.
We dont have to use cats I love cats. They don't have to die ether they just start making a yowling sound and run away a bit alerting you to gas.
It's an interesting idea, but might need some work.
It should be visible at a normal light level (clearly visible above light level 6 or 7) and should rise to the ceiling of the cave as to not cause random explosions when it's in a ravine with lava at the bottom (kind of like water, just the other way around) and removing after travelling upwards for, say, 8 blocks in broad daylight (or moonlight during the night).
I kind of like the idea of making it an alternative low-cost explosive to deal damage to mobs (or players, if you choose), but then again, splash potions kind of do this already with the added bonus that they don't damage the terrain.
If these gases could be used as a highly efficient fuel for furnaces, that would be great.
No support. This would just be annoying. Minecraft isn't supposed to be a game where you're constantly worrying. It's supposed to be a game where you have to be careful of mobs a bit but once you're mid to late game you can mostly just sandbox around.

Dont need a new item to remove the source block just use a glass bottle.
Ty Sirlollington and others for your support and ideas. Not just flow up but out, like water in reverse. Yes, limited just like you said. Visible, sure but not blatantly obvious for the toxic gas, more obvious for the explosive gas. Vapors in the air blocks. Oh the explosive gas wouldn't poison you if that helps its just explosive lol although in real life breathing it would most likely be bad. You can walk in it but do not put up a torch.
Would doors, and iron bars stop gas? I do not think that would be a good idea its not realistic.
I dunno. All this would really do is add a barely visible and largely unavoidable hazard to the game. Unlike other hazards that are combated actively (smacking skeletons with a sword, building a bridge over lava), it'd be highly impractical to deal with gases. Toxic gas would require you slowly chip away at the cloud from the outside, whilst explosive gas would force you to work in the dark. Both would require a large number of glass bottles. If they were usable as potions, then they wouldn't stack, either, so your inventory would fill up before long.
It'd just be a timesink, to be honest.
At the same time, I like the idea behind it. I'm not sure how a balance could be struck between impact and fun.
Uhhh, well... No. I'd prefer to take my chances with the hostile mobs and lava pitfalls, I don't need some troll gas to force me to mine somewhere quickly then run away while having to trek with a canary. Just... No support.

Hey, you there. Yes, you! Are you thinking about posting a suggestion on the forums anytime soon? If so, please read this before doing so.
Poor canaries...oh, um, where was I?
Sorry, no support. Though I think that we should have a new mining threat, I don't think gas is a good idea. I mean, what if you...never mind.

The poison gas does not kick in immediately. If the size of the pocket were limited you could have plenty of time to find the source block, which could be made "thicker" appearing so you can see it to scoop it with a bottle. A "leak" block in the stone maby, plug it with dirt or cobble stone ect and it kills the gas. Ether Gas. Like lava or water. The glass bottle only allows you to capture it, like a water bucket.
As for the explosive gas make the explosion only effect the gas blocks, not out side of the blocks. Make an audible "hiiiisssss" or, add your character making a *sniff sniff* sound effect when within 1 block of ether type of gas. Make it somewhat visible, or make two kinds, small pockets in the ground and rising vapors from the cave floor which you can walk around. Then pay attention and be observant like any other time in Minecraft.
The explosive gas in a glass bottle could be used in a furnace, consuming the bottle and gas but providing a faster cooking/smelting output for a time, like an enchantment effect on the furnace itself, which would "bubble" until the effect was over. Put in the bottle to enhance it then put in coal to cook stuff.
Throw the bottle into an area with fire to make a small boom.
Throw the poison gas bottle into an area to make a poison gas vapor section. Putting a block on where the poison gas bottle hit would plug the leak, or collect it yourself with a glass bottle.
You can also avoid the gas, like you can avoid lava and water. Mine around it...walk around it. Block it up.

A New Item, Problobly
But the rest, good suggestion.
(but don't worry, it is just my opinion)

Although I agree that this idea has its flaws, saying "well it's not in the spirit of minecraft" is not much of an argument.
