So what does it do? A potential problem in multiplayer is using hoppers to empty chests. This item would be used in crafting to create a new block 'chest with lock' that can only be opened by a player holding its corresponding 'colour key' and does not interact with hoppers.
In adventure maps it allows you to create 'locked doors' that are keyed to a specific 'key colour'. This is done by combining a [colour] Lock with a wooden door to make a '[Colour] Wooden Door with lock' Of course this is an adventure mode specific notion, since in survival you could still break the door down, but in adventure mode you wouldn't be able to without an axe.
How does one use it? When the key is held in your active inventory slot you may right click on the wooden door to open it. If the key is not held the door will not open (but can still be broken down by hand in survival!)
What it doesn't do. It doesn't protect chests against being 'mined' to dump contents. It is not keyed to specific players, only to the coloured key. Multiple keys can exist. Use ender chests for player specific chests. It doesn't affect iron doors which are still opened only with red stone.
How do I craft?
Lock WIP Recipe: 1 iron, (surrounded by) 4 levers. Key WIP Recipe: 1 iron, 1 stick (diagonally left and down from iron)
To colour, combine dye + above to make the coloured lock.
Magic Locks! A plain lock or key can be 'enchanted' on an anvil by naming the lock/key (i.e. password). Only keys that are named the same as the lock (and hence the door when combined) will open that door. Magic Doors cannot be broken down by anything less than diamond tools (survival or adventure) and should be impervious to zombies.
This way of making locks and keys costs experience to make more unique keys.
The WIP Experience levels may be ~10, 5 for each the lock and key.
Whut?
An item that is used in crafting.
Keys + [colour] Dye => [colour] Key
Lock + [colour] Dye => [colour] Lock
