Let's face it, oceans are perhaps the most boring, mundane, useless biome in Minecraft's entirety.
Never have I thought to myself, "today I'm going to travel all the way to the ocean biome to have so much fun!"
It's basically a blue, barren biome that is capable of nothing except suffocating you.
Thus, I have been thinking of many ways that oceans could improve and become a biome full of life and useful properties. Some will disagree of course, as this is the Internet, but I'd love to have suggestions so I can continue to blissfully dream of everything the ocean biome will hopefully become.
First of all, we'd need items such as scuba diving equipment and snorkels. What's the point of having a biome if you can't visit it for extended periods of time and have difficulty moving around?
1) Oxygen tanks:
When worn in the chest plate slot, the oxygen bar when underwater is eliminated. Possibly adds to armour rating when worn.
2) Flippers:
When worn in the boot slot, you can sprint and swim much faster underwater than normal. Possibly adds to armour rating when worn.
3) Goggles:
When worn in the helmet slot, the blurry effect when underwater is eliminated and you are able to see as clearly as you would above land. Adds to armour rating when worn.
4) Snorkel:
When worn, the oxygen bar when underwater is eliminated but only when you are 1-3 blocks underwater. It is much easier to craft than oxygen tanks, but not as effective.
With that out of the way, we can move on to mobs and plants to make the ocean burst with life.
For example, fish. That's obvious of course.
As with horses, there could be many variations of fish in colour, size and species.
However, they would be quite small, with size only varying from a quarter of a block to the size of a chicken.
Fish are very fast, but very weak with only one heart. They are difficult to catch underwater but when hit they drop a raw fish. They are very common and are in great numbers.
Aquariums and fish bowls could be added, allowing fish to be transported to the home as a lovely decoration. There, they could also be bred.
This could also improve the fishing mechanic already currently in place. You could be able to actually see the fish inching closer to your fishing rod bobber. You could possibly also craft fishing nets that increase the number of fish caught depending on the duration they are left in the water.
Jellyfish are another possibility, also varying greatly in size with the smallest being the size of the smallest slime and the largest of the biggest slime. They drift aimlessly through the water, and are passive during the day although if you come into contact with them they sting you, dealing damage depending on their size. However, at night they can glow, illuminating the beautiful ocean, however also may become aggressive, actively seeking the player out. They could drop slime balls, or even jello as a new food item. Also, they may drop poison which can be applied to swords to temporarily damage enemies further.
Dolphins could be tameable mobs that could be "ridden" through the water much like horses on land and are tamed through the use of raw fish.
Manta rays could be large mobs drifting aimlessly through the ocean on the surface, and they could be stood upon and take you to new destinations. They are completely passive and barely notice your presence.
Although predictable, sharks are another possibility. There could be a variety of species such as whale sharks, tiger sharks and great whites. Whale sharks could be passive, tiger sharks neutral and great whites aggressive (this is quite a stereotype as great whites are not very aggressive towards humans usually). Perhaps certain species could even be tameable? I may speak for myself, but I think ordering a flipping shark to attack enemies in the water would be really cool. When killed with great difficulty, they could drop shark teeth which can be crafted into cool armour or even used as a weak weapon.
On the ocean floor lies beautiful, multicoloured corals, seaweed and sponges. The corals could grow much like mushrooms, spreading slowly. There could be giant coral that could be dug out like a huge mushroom and form a makeshift house. Destroying coral could drop coral pieces, crafted into coral blocks that could be a beautiful decorative block used to create amazing undersea kingdoms.
Seaweed could be a crop, and could be edible. Starfishes and shells could act like flowers as small, decorative tiles. Here, underwater mobs such as fish, dolphins etc would be very plentiful.
Beaches could also be expanded upon, adding more life with palm trees which could drop coconuts when it's leaves are destroyed, much like oak trees and apples. Crabs could be small mobs that scurry across the sand and could easily be killed if caught. They may pinch when provoked. At night, giant crabs much like spiders could spawn and be aggressive towards the player. If killed, they could drop their carapace/shell which could be crafted into armour or a shield. They could also drop crab meat.
Not only this, but multiple adventures and exploration could also be entered upon. For example, instead of normal Overworld villages, there could be beautiful Atlantis-like villages made out of different materials such as coral blocks. Instead of the average villager, Atlantis could be home to mervillagers who basically behave like villages but...well, they stick to the ocean theme.
There could be ocean temples full of sharks, much like a dungeon. Perhaps there could be traps that may damage your scuba gear leading to an extra danger,
The ocean could be dotted with tropical island paradises full of palm trees, although possibly active volcanoes that may spew lava once in a while. Blazes could be able to spawn.
Different transportation ideas could also be placed. More complex boats could be crafted, such as powered boats, ships, submarines and jetskis.
That's all I have so far, but I think it would be so amazing to actually have useful and beautiful oceans. What do you think? Anyone have anymore suggestions? There are so many possibilities, it's amazing all they actually have so far is a huge amount of dirt and water.
All these ideas are great! I've been complaining that there is no fish, like mo creatures. However, I never take the time to play with mods, so having this in the game would add more immersion (I guess, well the world is made of blocks), anyways OCEAN NEEDS AN UPDATE!
I've been thinking to myself that the only thing keeping me from building an amazing underwater dome base is the complete lack of a view...unless you are into squid.
Reefs! Fish, even if just for effect! Kelp! Coral, the underwater cactus! Sharks! Boats that don't explode on lily pads!
As for the oxygen tank, snorkel etc, I'd much rather minecraft stayed medieval/alchemical in its influence. Maybe breathing potions? Maybe a new armor set specifically for ocean-going? It could be as simple as a 'swimming' enchantment for boots and possibly allowing respiration to enable underwater breathing.

Curse PremiumThe ocean needs to be more than just a bunch of dirt and sand with water on top of it.
