I find it a bit too lazy, how Every sword looks recolored but with the same exact look. I think it would be cool if It Each type of sword has an aspect of their own.
Some Words you wont understand so here is a normal Sword Anatomy picture to help you. :3
Stone Tools I think stone swords should have white string like features on the grip of the weapon. This also goes with a stone axe, hoe, and pic axe. the picaxes/hoes would have a string guarding the areas where the arch and the stick meet. Shovels as well would have these features.
Iron Tools
An iron sword would have a metal guard, with a wooden grip. (just like the normal texture) Also the grip wooden grip would have a red ribbon, to give it a "cool" feel. Iron Tools have nothing changed, except for the picaxes. The picaxe has a screw in the middle of the arch.
Gold Tools
A Golden Sword would have a chiseled carving on the blade. Also a red gem stone can be seen in the middle of the Guard. Golden tools would look the same except that the chiseled design is added in every part of them.
Diamond Tools Diamond Swords have a red ribbon on its grip, and shines depending on where the sun is. Diamond Tools no longer has a wooden grip though, instead it now has a metal one. This goes with all the other tools.
The anatomy isn't a very good reference - sometimes, swords don't have fullers, and is just one big blade. It also leaves out the "tang", which is basically what the grip is wrapped around. Without the tang, the blade would just break off. Some don't have the peen block either, and some swords are just completely different designs...
And some swords don't even have guards. What the heck is up with that? Unless it was meant as a close-quarters weapon, it just doesn't make sense to me. You'd get all your fingers chopped off.
I just felt like nitpicking on the picture, don't take that seriously.
My opinion on the suggestion itself, I'm not really a fan. Texture packs already serve this purpose, and some things are a little weird - for example, the diamond tools. Wouldn't the sticks have to be replaced with iron for the texture to make sense?

Though guards do protect your fingers, they were also for stopping blood from dripping on your hand and making your hand slip. I guess people didn't want guards.
