While I enjoy Minecraft in all of its entirety, I currently see no use for Villages and Villagers. I have no purpose to protect them or even to seek them out other than to plunder, loot, and steal. I believe implementing a monetary system as I'm about to describe would change this dramatically.
Every item should be assigned a monetary value of some sort, I'm voting for a gold coin system. Items should be able to be sold and bought in villages making the trade system a bit more useful. Specialists of the village, for example blacksmiths, should sell things that are hard to obtain, if not impossible to create, such as horse armor and the like, as well as normal level items.
The only item that should be able to be changed directly into its monetary value (gold coins) would of course be gold (nuggets) itself with use of the crafting table.
This change would give players a reason to protect and seek out villages all while helping them further their gameplay.

They already have this system, they're called Emeralds. There already is a reason to keep them alive. Trades. The trades may not be the best, but they're there.

And there are the two magic words that this forum is sick of. "Gold coins". For the 900th time, no. The currency is already there. Leave the gold coins to almost every other game out there that uses this overused form of currency.
While I enjoy Minecraft in all of its entirety, I currently see no use for Villages and Villagers. They have a few uses. Naming two - they provide carrots/potatoes, otherwise pretty much unobtainable. They also provide trades for things that are rare.

I agree with the fact the unobtainable items could be purchased from villagers.

This change would give players a reason to protect and seek out villages all while helping them further their gameplay. True, but it wouldn't further gameplay by much. Partial support.

Emeralds are your currency. Defer to it.
