Maybe if we had something like a tool called the New Sheet, we could get a GUI to paint our beds!
New Sheet Crafting Recipe:
L = Leather
I = Ink Sac
P = Paper

Explanation:
When a New Sheet is right-clicked on a bed, you will get a GUI where you can paint pixelated art on a completely white canvas. After you've finished painting, you can press the "Change Sheet" button. A New Sheet disappears from your inventory, and your art is now in place of the red part of your bed! You will also get a piece of paper called "Old Sheet", and on there is your old bed texture! You can right click your Old Sheet to get that sheet onto your bed!
There is also something called the New Pillow where you can change your pillow texture!
New Pillow Crafting Recipe:
F = Feather
I = Ink Sac

The New Pillow acts the same as the New Sheet, only it changes the pillow!

I once heard someone say you could fight off the Ender Dragon with sticks. He was the smartest person I have ever met.
How about taking a dye and shift-right-clicking the bed to change the blanket color? There's no need for all this complex stuff just to recolor a bed. Come on. It's a bed. It's a relatively simple to craft and use block.

"You tried mercenary work? It might suit you."
"On a scale of one mile to Lord of the Rings, how far did you walk today?"
It's be a good little touch. But the way you're presenting this seems like an all out giant mod. Just takes some dye and smear it on your bed (Shift+Right Click). Simple
I like the idea, but not as you presented it. Instead of a whole new GUI to make a bed, just use colored wool to change the color of the bed. Maybe even planks to change the wood the bed is based on.
I think beds are just fine - some texture packs randomize beds so that they have a chance of being a few different colors. I think, if anything, that's what we need. An equal chance to be a few different colors, nothing too extensive. A few colors wouldn't damage the framerate too much, and would provide a little diversity from the bland red.
Randomized textures would suit Minecraft better - no new items, no new GUIs, just a couple new textures. No support on this one, because it seems a bit too much to improve something that could be done very easily.
