I am not really good with introducing suggestions, but this is a repost of a previous suggestion I made, a year or two ago. I feel it could fit with Minecraft now, and I am going to give a simple scenario to sum up what it does.
You create a nether portal, go into the nether, collect your items, come back, etc. Everything normal, right? Well, after a few days, you see something out of place.. a zombie pigman. Maybe it was lightning.. Or was it?
Basically, my idea is this.. Over several phases, the Nether shall spill out of the portal, and "corrupt" the world. It can be selected as a option, which is off on default, but on in hard difficulty. The phases go like this.
Phase One- Zombie pigmen begin to spawn outside the portal. This phase stops occuring at phase five, as they will spawn all around the overworld now.
Phase Two- Rain and weather slows down until it stops completely at phase four.
Phase Three- Netherrack and soul sand begins to spawn outside the portal, replacing the dirt.
Phase Four- This phase will involve nights getting longer, caverns with a chance of having glowstone appear in them, which usually spawn on the roofs, normal mob spawnings to decrease above ground, but to increase underground, and magma cubes having a chance to spawn in certain biomes.
Phase four- If the one above didn't effect your survival above ground, this one will. Nether skeletons, and blazes slowly overrun the area around the portal. This phase will increase to the point that they spawn all around, at phase six. Noises around the portal, such as ghast sounds, can be heard, and will be a warning for the player of Phase five. Weather stops completely.
Phase five- Nether Quarts ore has a chance of spawning in the world, with ghasts slowly coming out. Pigmen now regularly spawn on the overworld.
Phase six- Ghasts increase in spawn on the overworld, and water in the world begins to evaporate, with desert biomes slowly increasing. Underground caverns become havens for animals, and players, if they choose to use one as a home. Nether skeletons and blazes spawn regularly on the overworld.
Phase seven- Ghast spawns finalize, as most are spread out on the overworld. Several evaporated lakes become filled with lava, including rivers. Some of the ocean is filled, but mostly, it is kept evaporated, without water or lava during this phase, to decrease lag, and to allow players to travel between continents/islands if they wish.
Phase eight- The last phase. All of the water in the world evaporates, except for underground sources. Anything that is water in direct view of the sunlight becomes evaporated. Underground villages begin to spawn, usually in huge caverns, with torches lighting them up. The sky gets darker, and at day, the sky is like a dark red. Nights now are very long, and can take up most of the day. Most of the world is now netherrack, or soul sand. Several nether fortresses spawn in the world, filled with several treasures, and creatures.
If you are wondering if this is able to be stopped, I had the idea of defeating the Wither. After defeating the wither, the process would either reverse naturally, or it would take you back to any structure you built, that you spawn in regularly, and it would be normal. Underground villages would still be there, but everything else would be the same before the deterioration.
That creeped me out more and more as I read each phase and pictured it lol! Despite that, man that sounds cool! The idea of all of this deteroration happening gradually is such a cool concept along with the idea of defeating a boss; the Wither, as you mentioned to reverse the effects.
If you destroy the Nether portal will it reverse it as well? I'm thinking maybe once it's past a certain stage, eg. half way; stage 4, or the last stage; stage 8, you can't reverse it by just destroying the Nether portal because the Nether has had too much influence on the real world. Then the only way to reverse the effects is to defeat the Wither.
Sounds good to keep it as an option; some people wouldn't like it as Deonyi suggested.

Phase One- Zombie pigmen begin to spawn outside the portal. This phase stops occuring at phase five, as they will spawn all around the overworld now. No, no no. They should not spawn all around overworld. Just let pigs get struck by lightning will ya?
Phase Two- Rain and weather slows down until it stops completely at phase four. No. Rain can be used in some future rain-based contraptions. Don't waste that. (Probably Cauldron + Comparator?)
Phase Three- Netherrack and soul sand begins to spawn outside the portal, replacing the dirt. No. Why not make the Netherfication yourself?
Phase Four- This phase will involve nights getting longer, No. I will want nights to get longer at times though (Probably in the winter season, if ever seasons do get added.) caverns with a chance of having glowstone appear in them, which usually spawn on the roofs, They cannot even regenerate in the Nether. How will they even grow there? normal mob spawnings to decrease above ground, but to increase underground, and magma cubes having a chance to spawn in certain biomes. No. No magma cubes in the overworld, please?
Phase four- If the one above didn't effect your survival above ground, this one will. Nether skeletons, and blazes slowly overrun the area around the portal. This phase will increase to the point that they spawn all around, at phase six. No. Just limit it around the portal. Noises around the portal, such as ghast sounds, can be heard, and will be a warning for the player of Phase five. Weather stops completely. Why do you not want weather?
Phase five- Nether Quarts ore has a chance of spawning in the world, with ghasts slowly coming out. Pigmen now regularly spawn on the overworld. No. Non-moving minerals should not even move to the overworld. Also, ghasts cannot fit portals. And, pigmen should be limited to the portals.
Phase six- Ghasts increase in spawn on the overworld, and water in the world begins to evaporate, with desert biomes slowly increasing. I love my water. Underground caverns become havens for animals, and players, if they choose to use one as a home. Nether skeletons and blazes spawn regularly on the overworld. No. I don't want to have to evacuate underground.
Phase seven- Ghast spawns finalize, as most are spread out on the overworld. Aaand they all despawn... Several evaporated lakes become filled with lava, including rivers. No. Some of the ocean is filled, but mostly, it is kept evaporated, without water or lava during this phase, to decrease lag, and to allow players to travel between continents/islands if they wish. I have to say, low tides in Minecraft seems interesting. If they don't cause lag, which they probably will.
Phase eight- The last phase. All of the water in the world evaporates, except for underground sources. Anything that is water in direct view of the sunlight becomes evaporated. Underground villages begin to spawn, usually in huge caverns, with torches lighting them up. Aaand zombies kill them. The sky gets darker, and at day, the sky is like a dark red. Why should the sun be affected too? How does Netherfication affect the sun? And if it does, shouldn't the sun just get brighter or stay the same? Nights now are very long, and can take up most of the day. How does Netherfication make the moon stay longer? Most of the world is now netherrack, or soul sand. No. Several nether fortresses spawn in the world, filled with several treasures, and creatures. How did the fortresses get there?
If you are wondering if this is able to be stopped, I had the idea of defeating the Wither. After defeating the wither, the process would either reverse naturally, or it would take you back to any structure you built, that you spawn in regularly, and it would be normal. Underground villages would still be there, but everything else would be the same before the deterioration. And how does the Wither have something to do with turning the world into Nether? Wouldn't it actually make sense if they withered the world? (Which is annoying and frustrating and should not be added either)
personally i don't really mind if a netherportal infects a 3-5 block region away from the portal, but then again you can make it look like that
by simply replacing dirt for nether rack yourself, and shape it so it may look cool.
ther's not a real point in this deterioration process.
I'm sorry, but there was no way that you thought this suggestion all the way through. Keep the Overworld in the Overworld and the Nether in the Nether. You're gonna have lazy players collecting free soul sand and whatnot just by a portal being placed.

Hey, you there. Yes, you! Are you thinking about posting a suggestion on the forums anytime soon? If so, please read this before doing so.
Cool idea, but option not, it wouldn't be that good for Vanilla. However, there is a mod very similar to it, Your post was well thought out, but I can't support.
