It would be nice to have some new bow crafting options that would make bows a little more various than just wooden. I could have also suggested a system of Iron, gold, and diamond bows, but that would still be boring and probably suggested before. Instead, I have thought up a system of interchangeable bow possibilities, meaning you could have an iron bow, with a normal string, or a wooden bow with an iron chord.
How does it work?
There are four variables that each part of the bow will determine. Draw time: How long does it take to draw the bow fully. Distance: How far does the arrow fly. Damage: How strong is the arrow when it hits. Durability: How many shots can be made before the bow is destroyed. So first, we need to know a few formulas:
(2a + 1/2e) / 4 = Draw time in seconds. This formula will determine how long the draw time is.
(30b + 30f) = Distance in Meters. This determines how far the arrow will go (one meter = one block)
(2c + 5g) = Damage. This determines how much damage the arrow will do.
(150d + 42h) = Durability. This will determine how many arrows the bow can shoot before it breaks.
Now we have the formulas, but you are probably confused because of the variables we added, I'll explain. The bows will now be made from two possibilities, what the shaft of the bow is made of, and what the chord of the bow is made of. Each one adds to the variables needed to solve these formulas.
Materials for the Shaft of the Bow:
Sticks: The first option is to make the bow like you normally do, using sticks. The bow made using sticks typically gives a bow with decently quick draw, but with below average damage, durability, and about medium damage. a = 2 / b = 1 / c = 2 / d = 2
Iron: Iron is the second option, and it shoots at about normal distance, does above average damage, and has a longer durability, however it takes a bit longer to draw the arrow than wood. a = 3 / b = 2 / c = 3 / d = 3
Gold: Gold is the third possible choice, it takes very little time to draw the arrow, can shoot a large distance, but it does very little damage, and has a very low durability. a = 1 / b = 3 / c = 1 / d = 1
Diamond: The final choice for the shaft of the arrow is diamond, which has a long range, strong damage, and long durability, but takes the longest to draw the arrow. a = 4 / b = 4 / c = 4 / d = 4
Materials for the chord of the bow:
String: You can use string like in the normal formula for crafting a bow, it has a moderate draw time, a short distance, moderate damage, and moderate durability. a = 2 / b = 1 / c = 2 / d = 2
Iron: You can have the chord made from iron, which has a moderate distance, the strongest damage, and the best durability, however it has the longest draw. a = 4 / b = 2 / c = 3 / d = 3
Gold: Gold is the third option for the chord of the bow, it has the quickest draw of the chords, and the longest distance, but it does the least damage, and has the lowest durability. a = 1 / b = 3 / c = 1/ d = 1
And there you go, a system where there are multiple possibilities, so you can mix the strength and durability of a diamond bow, with the speed of a gold chord, or vise versa. If anyone doesn't understand how items will be crafted I'll have pictures below. If you have any questions, comments, or constructive criticism PLEASE do leave a comment, all ideas are bettered by input.
There are twelve possible bow combinations and when I get a little more time I will figure out the stats of all of them, and even revise my math if necessary. Have a good day !
Meh. Bows are fine. Plus, an iron string wouldn't shoot very far. Have you ever plucked a guitar string?
Actually an Iron string can stretch a lot, and would shoot an arrow very far. A Guitar string is usually not stretched far enough to make a difference.

I have another idea. Instead of changing the string materials, replace the top and bottom of the string with wheels, (crafted with 4 iron but gives you 2 wheels) and that would give a compound bow.

any ways instead of just having gold/iron bars for the "string" section of the bow, how about a say?
string infused with iron/gold
for just Iron infused string? (perhaps 4 bars up,left, right and down of the string in the middle?)
wait heres one "FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDDDOOMMM!!!!" ~Demoman
Yeah, that would be easier, I withheld from doing that to make it simpler.
Hmmm Interesting.
