I searched most of the forum not finding a suggestion for this yet.
I had a strange idea of adding another item. Or tool. Something that would turn wool into string. You know like a spindle or something. Because some times the drop rate for string isn't to high, at least that's how it seems to me. Plus I usually can find sheep fairly easy. Does any one else like this idea? (sorry it is so short of an idea. )
I rather like Spaceboot's idea of it, in which right-clicking cats with wool gives you string. It just seems more harmonic than adding a whole new item just for the sake of converting wool.

Well the way I see it is that the item you should be able to make any were. Where is cats only spawn in jungle an not all ways do you spawn there or near one.

Well, for some reason, the game likes to make you spawn near or in jungles...

I have spawned a total of 3 times in a jungle an around 4 times near a jungle. Other times I was so far from one it took several minecraft days to get to one. My point is item would be ready at hand easier then a cat would.

Indeed. How about when a wool block is broken with a sword, string is given instead of a wool block?

I agree with GateFox. Spaceboots idea with wool and cats are better. It's not like string is that hard to find. All you need to do is find an abandant mineshaft or kill some spiders.
I must say, I am always interested when someone proposes a new tool, so a spindle would be cool. But it's just that I had this other cool idea of how to get string by using cats.
If you want to propose a really good new tool, you need to give it two or more applications. One should be a killer app that people have begged for to be put in Minecraft forever, and then there should be a secondary use or two.
Getting string from wool is something that many of us want, but is it a killer application? Rather I see it as one of those secondary things that you could tack onto a bigger idea to make the bigger idea work better.
Maybe a spindle could be crafted into a loom, and you could make tapestries and carpets? But then you've got something that looks like it should be the WeaveCraft mod, which may well exist, but sort of goes beyond the scope of vanilla, IMO. A spindle by itself is too small for vanilla, but if you beef it up with related weaving items, it's too big for vanilla.
And making you use cats would encourage exploration and use of features that some people may not use much or at all now.
(Off-topic) Honestly I don't like it at all when people say things like this. Minecraft is supposed to be a sandbox game where I can do what I want. If I don't want to use a feature I shouldn't have to.
(On-topic) I feel like being able to convert wool into string would make it too easy to get string. I'm definitely not the kind of person who wants Minecraft harder, but I think that we shouldn't be given easier ways of getting materials/playing the game. We already have things like charcoal and beds which take some of the fun out of the survival part of the game. This just takes all the work out of getting a material. I feel the same way about being able to make string into wool which currently is in the game. I understand there is some difficulty along with this suggestion since you would need to tame an ocelot to get a cat, but that seems like too much work just to get some string. You need to get string first for fishing just to tame an ocelot, so this idea would be pointless if you already are able to get string.

Well its not a bad idea either to use the cats, just that not every one would want to travel that far. The Item wouldn't just be for that, it could be to make other things. I would just like an option to convert the wool back to string. I do go down in to mineshaft to get string. but i get a bunch of it then i don't have room for other things so i end up turning it in to wool to make room.
