I'm having a feeling that the caves are not deep enough. I can reach the bedrock in only 10 minutes from the beginning of survival
I'm thinking about making it much deeper. The deeper you go, the more interesting things you will find.
Oceans and mountains will be much deeper and higher. The new maximum depth for Ocean will be 128 metres while mountains can go up to 256 metres although you can't pillar up to the End.
Nether will also be accessible without portal but very hard as you must find the hole in bedrock layer that will take you to Nether.
To make things interesting, there will be deep cave system and endless system. There will even be subterranean biomes. Go even deeper and you'll reach bedrock layer #1. The bedrock can be broken but requires Diamond pickaxe. You will also find stone that's slightly darker. It's harder and requires Stone pickaxe or better to mine it. Under the first bedrock layer, you'll find strange labyrinth system. It twists and turns in all directions and there are even vertical corridors. There are good loots. You can even find diamonds and emeralds.
Now, to go deeper and deeper, until you hit the second bedrock layer. The bedrock is indestructible, you have two options here.
Option 1: Construct a portal to Nether, saving much time travelling back and forth.
Option 2: Find a hole that allows you to enter the Nether. However, it can be time-consuming to travel back.
Nether Portals play an important role in travelling back and forth. It saves a significant amount of time, while in the Nether, trying to get back up to surface without portal is difficult.
There is a barrier that prevents you from pillaring up to the End. To remove the barrier, you must find Stronghold and enter the End Portal. After that, you can pillar up to the End however you want. Void is also removed from the End so if you fall off, you will be in Overworld.
Anyways, once you reach the bottom of Nether, you will reach 3rd Bedrock Layer. Like the second, it's indestructible.
There are possibilities of new ores: Silver and Titanium. Silver appears at -64 while Titanium appears at -128. Diamonds will only be found under -192.
What will happen to the cave? It will be much BIGGER when you go deeper. There will be much fewer passages so it's less maze-y. However, if you go deeper to -256, expect to find massive, endless cave when you go a bit deeper. There is also bright fog, similar to when exploring extremely long caves. There are also bioluminescence, with blue and green glow. You can use the bioluminescent mushroom to apply glowing dye, can be used to make your armour having glow-in-the-dark texture! You can apply it to make your tools glow. It doesn't give off light however, until entity lighting is implemented.
I think this stuff was all covered fairly well in the Cubic Chunks and Subterranean Biomes threads. The only thing that is really unique here is getting to the Nether through the Bedrock, which is entirely unnecessary.

The problem is lag. Cubic chunks can be used. See the thread for info.
Support or no support? Think of cave exploring, it can get boring at one point.
It took me 30 minutes of writing. The picture is for illustrative purposes only.
