It has always bothered me that after a few minecraft days, farming becomes unimportant, even the smallest person can comfortably sustain a person indefinitely. So I propose a few tweaks to farming.
Th first of the tweaks is the scythe (I think that's what people used to harvest wheat with, but correct me if I'm wrong). The scythe would be crafted as such.

m=material ( iron, wood, diamond)
s=stick
To harvest anything you would need to use the scythe, or else you wouldn't get anything at all. (Note, the scythe can be enchanted with silk touch so that anything collected would drop its fully grown form and then planted fully grown, the use of this will be explained in the next tweak)
The second tweak is that if a crop is not harvested once grown, the plants will begin to wither and die. Each plant will have its own number of stages of death, but as a rule it will be half as many as its stages of growth and therefore on average take half as long.
Watermelons and pumpkins are different are different, the actual block will wither and die very quickly once grown. If the block dies, the plant will also start to wither, and nothing will grow. At that point you may as well just break the stalk and plant another seed. As for the use of silk touch on the scythe, if you harvest a partly withered plant, it will drop the plant in that stage of death, and when it is replanted it will not continue to die. This might be a good addition if your building a ruined city or something of the sort.
If I think of anymore tweaks, ill be sure to post them, but that's it for now. Please tell me if you liked it, and if you didn't, please don't be one of those people who just say 'I don't like it'. Please try and tell me why you didn't like it and elaborate on how it may be improved.*smallest farm can sustain a person indefinitely*. I have a bad habit of not checking what I've written.

I do not care about your dragon, I will not click it, it is not real, and I hope it dies in a fire.
People playing Minecraft have enough to worry about as it is without dying crops. You're going for total realism, but we don't need total realism. We need balanced playability, which this clearly does not provide. If you don't believe me, here's an example: Caving. People may have a working farm which they allow to grow while they're caving. If when they come back, they find all their crops dead and themselves without food, they wouldn't be inclined to continue farming. Does that sound like a better farming experience to you?

That's the point of it, so that you can't just leave crops lying around, and go over and get some food whenever your getting low. I don't know about you but, if I wanted to I could have a chest full of bread, easy. I do understand what your saying, there are a lot of things to do and worry about, but farming just has so little point, with this, farming becomes a task that requires more attention even later on in the game.

Farming has less of a point when you have to keep track of everything. And farming does have a purpose late in the game: breeding (wheat and carrots), brewing (carrots), and golem-making (pumpkins). Baked potatoes are also an efficient food source, even when meat is available.
